Sprint, NASCAR extend relationship

During the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series awards banquet at the Wynn Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Friday night, series title sponsor Sprint announced that it had extended its agreement with NASCAR to be the title sponsor of the Sprint Cup Series through 2016.

“I could not be more pleased than to announce and celebrate tonight that Sprint and NASCAR have agreed to an extension of our relationship, ensuring that through at least the 2016 season, every champion crowned will be a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion,” Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said.

The deal for an extension between Sprint and NASCAR is a three deal one, as the orginal 10-year deal was set to expire at the end of the 2013 season. The original agreement began with the 2004 season with Nextel to rename the series the Nextel Cup Series. Nextel eventually became a part of Sprint and the series was renamed the Sprint Cup Series. The cellular carrier replaced long-time series title sponsor, Winston.

The partnership between NASCAR and Sprint meant a $5.8 million payday for 2011 series champion Tony Stewart, as he was presented a check for that amount by Sprint at the banquet on Friday.
