Steve Johnson Plays a Little Too Hard
Steven Johnson, the Buffalo Bills star receiver, may have hit the party button a little too early on sunday during their game against the New York Jets. His dance during his touchdown drive in the first quarter has landed himself in the top spot for most talked about celebration of the season thus far. Not only did Johnson pull out double six shooters, but he also pretended to shoot himself in the leg, which was obviously a slap in the face to Jets player Plaxico Burress who was in jail in 2008 for doing just that.He finished his celebration by pretending to be a jet and crashing to the ground. Was it funny? Absolutely. Was it uncalled for? Absolutely.
After the play the officials in the game flagged Johnson for excessive celebration and led the Jets to great field position on their next possession. That possession led to a Jets touchdown and an eventual Jets 28-24 win. Johnson, late in the fourth quarter, also dropped an easy pass that could’ve been the possible winning touchdown.
"I felt like I cost our team a win on that," Johnson said of the undisciplined 15-yard excessive celebration penalty. "It was just a bad decision."
"I don't think he's a bad person; I think he's a good person," a clearly perturbed Bills coach Chan Gailey said. "(But) I think he has some bad judgment at critical times. I've got to help him get over that. We can't have that, it hurts our football team."
The loss for the Bills is likely to have ended all hopes for a play-off birth which is likely another monster in Johnson's closet of things to worry about.
As you might expect, Jets players weren't happy about Johnson's fancy dancing and mocking. "That was an ignorant thing to do," tight end Dustin Keller said. Keller also called Johnson an idiot and Santonio Holmes, another of Johnson's targets, called him "classless." Burress said he has heard worse. Despite Burress's calmness during the entire situation, can anyone doubt that he was angered by the incident? Jets coach Rex Ryan commented by saying, "Well, I have no comment."
At the end of the game however, it is safe to say that the Jets got the last laugh, despite being possibly one of the luckiest teams in the NFL and winning many games that they had no business winning. Both the men that Johnson so happily mocked ended up being the players of the game making big catch after big catch that led the Bills to a disappointing loss.
If there is a word in the dictionary to explain the events of the game its K: for KARMA!
Johnson and the Bills will face the Titans in week 13, followed by the Chargers, Dolphins, Broncos and will finish off with Tom Brady and the Patriots. Can we expect to see some more fancy dance moves from Johnson or is it safe to say that after a painful loss he might have learned his lesson?
