Phillies Get Ty Wigginton in Deal with Rockies
The Philadelphia Phillies have acquired utility infielder Ty Wigginton for a player to be named later or cash from the Colorado Rockies. The 34 year old plays third base, second base, and first base. Wigginton hit .242 with 15 homeruns in 130 games for the Rockies in 2011. He is a career .265 hitter with 158 homeruns.
Wigginton will give the Phillies some flexibility in the infield as he can help cover for Ryan Howard while he is out and give Chase Utley and Placido Polanco a break while providing Charlie Manuel with some pop in the lineup. Overall this is a nice pickup for the Phillies as the infielder will increase the team's depth. Let's just hope trading for Wigginton does not stop the team from pursuing Michael Cuddyer.
