New crew chief for Montoya

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series organization, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing, announced on Tuesday that it has hired Chris Heroy to work as crew chief on the No. 42 team with driver Juan Montoya in 2012.

“We are very excited to bring Chris into the organization and to have him work with Juan,” car owner Chip Ganassi said. “We think he will be a great addition to the Target team and believe his combined engineering and crew chief background should help him work well with both our engineers and competition folks to move our program forward.”

Heroy most recently worked at Hendrick Motorsports. He served as lead engineer at HMS for seven years, six on the No. 5 car and one on the No. 88 car. He also worked as a crew chief in the Nationwide Series for a few races in 2011 for drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jimmie Johnson.

Heroy replaces Jim Pohlman who was fulfilling crew chief duties on the No. 42 team on an interim basis after Earnhardt Ganassi fired Brian Pattie in July.

“I am really looking forward to working with the guys in the shop at Earnhardt Ganassi Racing to help the No. 42 improve their performance,” Heroy said. “Juan is a great driver, and they have a lot of great people here, so I am thrilled to get this opportunity.”

Montoy has been with EGR his entire Sprint Cup career. In his five previous seasons at the Cup level, Montoya has tallied two wins, 20 top-fives and 49 top-10 finishes in 181 races.
