Nearly 33 years after Atlantic City casinos open, a cold economy, winter loom
My only day off this week, Friday, Nov. 18, I decided to head over to Breadsticks at Resorts International Casino in Atlantic City.
A former co-worker of mine at the Atlantic City International airport grill, left employ of said grill where I work and he also works as a cook at Breadsticks cafe.
“Look me up sometime,” the guy said. “I’ll hook you up.”
I went Friday, and he had a day off. Another time, I guess.
Anyway, without the new friend around, I spent some time with an old friend, whom I have known since I was a child.
Atlantic City.
The Boardwalk in particular.
Where most of the town’s casinos have boardwalk entrances.
I worked at Resorts in the summer of 2009 in the main kitchen. Chefs said they liked the job I did. Maybe they did, but I was a seasonal employee and my job ended the day before Labor Day.
Resorts was Atlantic City first casino, opening in May, 1978.
To take a positive look at Atlantic City, it is a combination of the new and the old.
On the negative side, the bad economy has hit Atlantic City’s casinos bad and the Boardwalk shops worse.
Today was about Atlantic City in the winter, the offseason.
My car thermometer read 38 degrees.
Anyone who knows Atlantic City in the winter, knows how cold the wind whips through two buildings on the street leading up to the Boardwalk. It is like a wind tunnel.
As the morning frost on the Boardwalk melted, a good walk on the boards was warrented on this day.
There is one thing that most likely will never be taken away: the beauty of the beach and Atlantic Ocean.
So as Revel casino attempts to join as Atlantic City’s 12th casino, Atlantic City tries to keep some of the old to combine with the new.
Sports betting is on the horizon. Will it make a difference?
It was easier when we used Monopoly money.
