JD serves up Joe Nathan signing for Thanksgiving
It's been said time and time again, but it can't be said enough.
Jon Daniels is a ninja.
I feel like I've been pretty good at monitoring the MLB trade rumors. But tonight, out of nowhere, T.R. Sullivan tweeted that the Rangers had signed Joe Nathan.
What?
Where did that come from?
Leave it to J.D. to keep his negotiations and scouting under wraps until it's a done deal. It's like a surprise party.
SURPRISE!!
WE SIGNED A NEW CLOSER!!
FOR $14 MILLION OVER TWO YEARS!!
OH...
... AND NEFTALI FELIZ IS GOING TO THE ROTATION!!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING, RANGERS FANS!!
OK, so the price tag scares me a little, especially given the fact that Nathan will turn 37 tomorrow and his recent past is kind of sketchy. But JD has a pretty good track record, and Mike Maddux is the Pitchers Whisperer, so I think it'll all end up just fine.
And this Feliz to the rotation business? I know several fans who have been waiting two (or more) seasons for this. I guess it's time to see if the kid can do it.
So does this mean the Rangers have given up on C.J. Wilson? I doubt it. But since the 2011 Opening Day starter is dining with Angels officials, probably even as I type this, and is reportedly seeking a deal worth $120 million over six years (way too much .... sorry, C.J.), I'm fine with the Rangers preparing for the possibility that he departs. By the way, I've actually made peace with the idea of C.J. leaving (even though I really want him to stay), but I cannot handle it if he goes to the Angels. At all.
That said, welcome to Arlington, Joe Nathan.
