Drugs, Stolen Property Found in Mayfield's Home
Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitor Jeremy Mayfield was arrested for possession of mathamphetamines on Tuesday. An arrest report from the Catawba County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Deparment said that 1.5 grams of the drug was found at his home.
The drugs were discovered when police officers executed a search warrant to look for property that had been reported stolen.
Mayfield was also charged with possession and intent to sell marijuana and released on a $3,000 unsecured bond. He had a court date scheduled for Wednesday.
Mayfield was also found to be in possession of property stolen from Red Bull Racing, the state of North Carolina and two other local businesses. The district attorney’s office will determine whether or not to charge him for those offenses.
“We can confirm that we filed a police report for stolen property earlier this year,” Red Bull Racing said in a written statement. “We have been made aware of the Mayfield situation and are working with local authorities to gain more information.”
Catawba County officers also confiscated more than 40 firearms from Mayfield’s home and are in the process of determining if any of those have been reported as stolen.
Mayfield was suspended from NASCAR competition after failing a drug test in 2009. He has since sued NASCAR over the suspension. Before his suspension, Mayfield competed in 433 Sprint Cup races and recorded five wins.
