Texas BBA Chapter Weighs In on Top AL Pitcher

The Walter Johnson Award is given to the top pitcher in each league.  As a blogger for the Texas Rangers, I can only vote on the American League honorees.

It's amusing to me that this is such a tough category this year.  The American League is supposed to be known for hitters, right?  Well, they've got a little pitching in there too.  It was really hard for me to narrow my list down to five.  There were so many other pitchers I liked (or feared) this season.  But, alas, I had to choose just a handful. So, without further ado, here are my five picks.

  1. Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers) = 24-5, 2.40 ERA, 250 Ks and 57 BBs.
  2. Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim) = 18-8, 2.41 ERA, 198 Ks and 56 BBs.
  3. James Shields (Tampa Bay Rays) = 16-12, 2.82 ERA, 225 Ks and 65 BBs.
  4. C.C. Sabbathia (New York Yankees) = 19-8, 3.00 ERA, 230 Ks and 61 BBs.
  5. C.J. Wilson (Texas Rangers) = 16-7, 2.94 ERA, 206 Ks and 74 BBs.

As Texas Chapter President, it's my job to combine the ballots from the other Texas Rangers bloggers, which include 40-Year Rangers Fan and Chicken Fried Baseball.  Here is our combined ballot:

  1. Justin Verlander (Detroit Tigers)
  2. Jered Weaver (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim)
  3. James Shields (Tampa Bay Rays)
  4. C.C. Sabathia (New York Yankees)
  5. C.J. Wilson (Texas Rangers)
