Late touchdown give Penn State’s Joe Paterno all-time Division One 409th win
For most of Saturday’s Big Ten matchup between Penn State and Illinois, the Penn State offense was stagnant.
But Silas Redd’s 3-yard run with just a minute left in the fourth quarter gave the Nittany Lions a 10-7 lead that they would not relinquish.
The win was Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's career 409 win, the most of any coach in Division I college football.
Illinois had taken a 7-0 lead in the third quarter when Nathan Scheelhaase hit Spencer Harris for a 10-yard touchdown.
Matt McGloin was the starter for Penn State and an appearance by quarterback Rob Bolden would not get the Penn State offense going.
But late in the fourth quarter, Penn State blocked an Illinois punt, giving the home team the ball inside the Illinois 30.
The offense stalled nearing the goal line and Anthony Fera hit a 30-yard field goal to close Penn State to 7-3.
With just over two minutes left, McGloin and the offense took the field.
The offense was enlivened by the appearance of senior wide receiver Derek Moye, who was recovering from a foot injury.
Moye had a key 20-yard pass in the drive and with 1:08 left, Redd ran it in from three yards out.
Illinois had a chance to tie the game at 10, but Derek Dimke’s 42 yarder hit the right goal post.
Redd had a career-high 30 carries for 137 yards.
The game was marred by turnovers, five fumbles by Penn State (8-1, 5-0 Big Ten).
A freak October snow covered Beaver Stadium, and despite heavy flurries in the first half, the field and footballs remained dry.
Illinois falls to 6-3, 2-3.
The win moves Paterno past Grambling’s Eddie Robinson alone with a record 409 wins in Division I.
