Devils Alley: Brodeur's Injury Changes The Devils Upcoming Four Game Road Trip

InjuryNew Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello told the press today that goaltender Martin Brodeur will be sidelined at least 7-10 days as he rehabs his injured shoulder.

Brodeur was knocked out during the first period against the Los Angeles Kings last week, and missed the team's only game after against Nashville. Lamoriello says that Brodeur will be day to day, but its unsure if he will be ready for the team's upcoming road trip that starts on Saturday and lasts until the end of October.

Johan Hedberg is expected to start the games that Brodeur misses while Keith Kinkaid is called up from the AHL to be the backup. But Hedberg, who is 3-1 with a 1.41 GAA in place of Brodeur this season, and whom I believe is the better goalie for New Jersey, may not have the same success when the team travels away from Prudential Center.

Brodeur's injury will change the upcoming road trip because of Hedberg's performance against the opposing teams. Here is a comparison of Brodeur's and Hedberg's lifetime numbers against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Phoenix Coyotes, and Dallas Stars, the four teams that Hedberg will face in the upcoming weeks.

Pittsburgh Penguins:
Brodeur: 25-4 2.46 GAA
Hedberg: 2-4 2.93 GAA

Los Angeles Kings:
Brodeur: 8-6 2.13 GAA
Hedberg: 2-6 3.72 GAA

Phoenix Coyotes:
Brodeur: 12-8 2.18 GAA
Hedberg: 3-5 3.54 GAA

Dallas Stars:
Brodeur: 11-9 1.99 GAA
Hedberg: 2-1 1.32 GAA

Besides his career numbers against Dallas, Hedberg is near 3.00 GAA against the other three teams he will face toward the end of October. On the other hand, Brodeur has some of his best career numbers against these teams and has eight or more wins against all four. Hedberg is also under .500 against three of the four teams as well.

To extend the statistics, Brodeur's road GAA (2.30) is significantly better then Hedberg's (2.88) during their careers, and Brodeur has played in far more games against all four teams then Heddy.

In a season where the Devils are failing to score despite averaging 31 shots per game, Pete DeBoer needs a goalie who will be able to stop shots. He has put faith in Hedberg this season, and hopes that Brodeur missing time will not be a problem.

"It makes it easier when you've got a guy that's capable of coming in and playing like Heddy has," DeBoer said.

Hedberg has been good thus far filling in for Brodeur, but it is hard to believe that he will continue to succeed with career numbers so bad. Lamoriello said that it's not definite that Brodeur will miss the entire roadtrip, but that the team is being cautious in rushing him back.

Hopefully he returns before the end of the month, but for now Devils fans will have to hope that Hedberg can continue his hot streak on the road.
