2011 MLB season in review: Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers won 96 games, the National League Central title, and went down to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS. At first that may seem a little surprising, but the Cardinals and Brewers did play 18 games against one another this season and split them 9-9. The Brewers would go 51-29 against the other 5 NL central teams, but 22 of those wins game against the lowly Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros. The Brewers also went just 6-9 in inter-league play this year.

The Brewers scored 721 runs on 1,422 hits and the team batting average was .261. That was the third highest batting average in the NL, and their runs and hits total saw them finish in the upper half of the 16 team senior circuit. With 185 home runs they led their league, and were in the top half in other extra base hits. Brewers’ batters struck out just 1,083 times and drew 481 walks. From those numbers we see this is a team that puts the ball in play a lot.

The pitching staff gave up 638 runs on 1,348 hits. The staff ERA was 3.63 and that was just seventh best in their league. While every starter reached double-digit wins, two of their starters (the number one and two starters) also had double-digit losses. Not one Brewer starter had a sub 3.50 ERA. They did strike out 1,257 batters, and issue just 440 walks. Their closer had 46 saves and for the most part the rest of the bullpen performed well.

Of course the big thing for the Brewers and their fans now is what to do with Prince Fielder. He hit .299 with 38 home runs this year and is likely due a raise from his 15.5 million dollar one year deal he signed last off season. If he decides to leave they will have to replace a ton of offense. However, with a sub 100 million dollar payroll they can afford to either pay Fielder or make a big move on the free agent market.
