2011 MLB Season in review: Houston Astros

So it feels pretty good to move another one of my writing mainstays over to MTR media. Each year I take three looks at every baseball team (in between everything else that happens of course) a preview, mid year review and a final review. We always start with the wrist team and by the time we are done we will be at the best team. For 2011, we begin with the Houston Astros.

So the Astros have the worst record in MLB this year. They went just 56-106 and finished in last place in the National League Central. The number that concerns me is they finished a full 40 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers, not good. Of course, they were sold and a massive rebuilding project is set to begin any day.

The record speaks for itself but they went 28-50 against the team in their division, and managed just a 4-11 record in inter-league play. Things are not good in Houston, and they are going to need a ton of work.

The Astros offense scored 615 runs on 1,442 hits, and hit .254 as a team. That hit total was third most among the senior league teams, but speaks to a lack of power since the run total fourth worst in their league. They did lead the NL with 209 doubles, but with just 95 home runs they came home second worst. Astros batters did draw just 401 walks, worst in their league, and struck out 1,164 times.

The pitching staff gave up 796 runs on 1,477 hits and the staff ERA was 4.51. That is the highest staff ERA of the 16 senior circuit clubs. They only had one starter reach double digit victories and he had as many losses as wins. In all the Astros staff struck out 1,191 batters and issued 560 walks.

From these numbers it seems this is a team in need of some pitching talent. I think the lineup could be ok if they added some power, but starting pitching will have to be where they look to rebuild from.
