Phillies Get to Braves’ Vaunted Bullpen for Series Sweep

Pinch hitter Ross Gload ended a suspenseful, tight, pitchers’ duel with a walk off single off closer Peter Moylan in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Raul Ibanez walked on a full count with one out, Carlos Ruiz singled to put men on first and second.

Then Gload followed with his first walk off hit of the year to give the Phillies the 3-2 win and the series sweep. Ross gload

The win moved the Phillies to a 10 ½ lead over the Braves and made their magic number 12 to clinch their fifth straight National League East crown.

The Phillies had a chance to break a 1-1 duel in the bottom of the sixth, but fell short in a 2-1 Braves win on Wednesday night.

The Braves looked to get their third out of the inning, when Placido Polanco hit a sinking line drive that Jason Heyward looked like he caught.

The umpire conferred as the replay showed Heyward had trapped the ball.

After Chase Utley was hit on the helmet with a pitch by reliever Eric O’Flaherty, Ryan Howard came to the plate with bases loaded.

Howard struck out to keep the score, 1-1.

The Braves took the lead in the seventh, as Heyward singled, went to second on a ground out and scored on a Freddy Freeman single to make it 2-1.

Roy Oswalt, who had pitched well, was relieved by Antonio Bastardo in the top of the 8th inning.

The Braves threatened again in the eighth, with men on first and second, Dan Uggla lined a ball to Polanco, who turned a neat double play, touching third and throwing to second for the double play.

Matt Diaz flied out in foul territory to end the eighth.

Pinch hitter John Mayberry Jr. singled and was sacrificed to center.

After Shane Victorino struck out, Polanco followed the game-tying single.

Pinch hitter Ben Francisco walked, but the threat end when Ryan Howard struck out.

Jonny Venters entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Oswalt, in seven innings gave up four hits, two runs, four walks and seven strikeouts. Oswalt

Utley, after being hit on the head and taking first base, was removed for Pete Orr, and will be observed to see if he misses any time.
