Northwestern Backup QB Kain Colter Throws for 197 Yards in 24-17 Victory over Boston College
Saturday afternoon at Chestnut Hill the Northwestern Wildcats defeated the Boston College Eagles 24-17 without the service of standout QB Dan Persa.
Persa did not dress and is recovering from a ruptured achilles tendon. His backup, sophomore Kain Colter, did well.
Colter completed 17 of his 24 attempts for 197 yards and one interception. In addition, he ran for 71 yards with one touchdown. Not exactly Persa numbers, but good enough to lead the Wildcats to victory.
Boston College was without preseason ACC player of the Year, running back Montel Harris, and the Wildcats' were able to contain his backup Andre Williams.
Williams first carry of the game went for 69 yards but he was held to 45 on his next 21 carries, finishing with 114 yards on 22 carries with two touchdowns.
The Cats' were also able to shut down the tight end duo of Chris Pantaie and Lars Anderson, limiting them to just one catch (Pantaie) for 18 yards.
However, the defense needs to step up on third down. Boston College convert 8 of 17 third downs with several big pass plays. BC's quarterback Chase Rettig finished with 375 passing yards, something Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald is sure to work on.
The Cats' pass rush did get to Rettig with Jack DiNardo, Brian Peters and Tyler Scott each sacking him one time.
Saturday the Wildcats will host Eastern Illinois at Ryan Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the Cats could be without both Persa and Colter. Teddy Greenstein, Chicago Tribune reporter, reported in his article "Backup QB Colter Leads NU Past BC, that an NU offical announced Colter was getting a "precautionary" X-ray on an undisclosed bofy part.
