TravesTy: NYG Lose Terrell Thomas For The Season

The Giants defense took a big blow in Monday’s preseason game against Chicago with the loss of cornerback Terrell Thomas to a torn ACL.  Thomas, a former USC standout, is an extremely underrated corner that led the NYG with 101 tackles and five interceptions last season.  His play was even more impressive considering the fact that T2 was targeted consistently with opposing teams trying to shy away from throwing at No.1 corner Corey Webster.  The loss is devastating to the Giants’ secondary which is also without first round pick Prince Amukamara who will miss the first couple months of the season with a broken foot.

Another former first round pick, Aaron Ross, will replace Thomas in the starting lineup.  Ross is injury prone and has not lived up to his draft status thus far in his career, but he has been effective this preseason.  Ross shut down Bears No.1 receiver Roy Williams on Monday night and shouldn’t be too much of a downgrade on the outside in New York’s base 4-3 defense.

Thomas’s loss will be felt most when the Giants are forced to bring in extra defensive backs in their nickel and dime packages.  Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell will likely be forced to return to the three safety look that the team employed often in 2010, with Deon Grant entering as the fifth defensive back in passing situations.  Don’t be surprised if the Giants give up a lot of yards in the slot this season as shifty slot receivers will likely now be covered by Grant or a linebacker.  Even when Amukamara returns, there is no telling how effective he will be as a rookie who has missed a ton of practice time.

The Giants emerged from this April’s draft with an overwhelming amount of talent at the cornerback positions with four first or second round picks at the position.  It is now evident that they will have to rely heavily on their depth at the position and they may be in the market to add even more.  Don’t be surprised if the Giants look to sign a veteran cornerback this week, and expect them to continue the search for secondary depth right up until the season starts.

The injury is unfortunate for Thomas who is in a contract year.  It will be interesting if he ends up in a situation like Steve Smith where the Giants front office is hesitant to pay him due to fear of loss of explosion.  Giants fans can only hope that Thomas is back with the team next year and returns to his pre-injury form.
