Detroit Lions lose RB Mikel Leshoure for the season
The Detroit Lions lost rookie RB Mikel Leshoure for the season today. Leshoure has torn his Achilles tendon and his rookie year has ended prematurely. It is yet another injury the upstart Lions have suffered this of season as fellow rookie DT Nick Fairley will miss significant time, and OT Jeff Backus is likely miss the entire pre-season with a biceps injury.
It is pretty disappointing for Lions fans as they are potentially seeing a breakout season going down the toilet even before the first pre-season game. Granted these are two rookie players, and the Lions roster still looks pretty strong, but the team and its fans were counting on these two rookies making a significant impact.
In the end, this is football and injuries do happen, thank god, General Manager Martin Mayhew has really worked on the depth of his team, at almost every position, and it is that work that will help this team survive these injuries.
For now the Lions will likely look to add a veteran power running back. I am not quite sure of the status of RB Maurice Morris who has been with the team, but that would be the likely first option. I wonder if the team would consider a guy like Clinton Portis, or Mike Hart from the Indianapolis Colts. If they wanted to add a guy like Michael Bush that would cost them something has he has been tendered by the Oakland Raiders. Jerome Harrison formerly of the Philadelphia Eagles could be another possibility.
