Yanks Crush M's in Series Opener

FG There was a rain delay of one hour and 57 minutes at Yankee Stadium last night in anticipation of a storm front that was heading for the Bronx at the start of the game. But there was no rain, that is, until the game started.

The Seattle Mariners headed into last night’s game with a franchise record 15 game losing streak under their belts, and looked to try and get back on track with a win against the New York Yankees. These hopes were soon thwarted, however, when Yankee first baseman Mark Teixeira smacked a two run homerun off of Mariners’ starter Jason Vargas in the bottom of the 1st to put the Yankees up two to nothing.

After the Mariners scored a run in the top of the 3rd, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter got it right back, taking Vargas’ pitch over the right field wall to give the Yankees a two run lead again.

Everything really started to fall apart for the Mariners after that. After a fielding error and a questionable call at first, which would have ended the 4th inning, the Yankees capitalized on the Mariners mistakes, hitting back to back RBI singles (Nunez and Gardner), making the score five to one.

With runners at the corners, Derek Jeter hit a groundball to second base. Mariners second baseman Dustin Ackley tried to throw out Nunez at home, but his throw hit Jeter’s bat and allowed Nunez to score and both runners to move into scoring position, reflecting the misfortune of the Mariners for the past few weeks.

When the 4th inning was finally said and done, the Yankees were up eight to one, a lead they would not relinquish as they would go on to win the game 10-3. Vargas allowed eight runs through four innings of work, but only four of them were earned.

Not to be overshadowed was the pitching performance of Yankees starter Freddy Garcia. The 34-year old veteran only gave up three runs in seven and two thirds innings pitched.

Garcia’s pitching has been a godsend to the Yankees this year. If he and Bartolo Colon were not as effective for the Yankees as they have been, the Yankees would not be in the position they are in right now in the American League East.

Tonight, the Yankees send C.C. Sabathia to the mound to face off against Doug Fister. Sabathia, who is looking for his Major League best 15th win, is 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA in his last four starts against Seattle.
