New York Yankees Round-Up July 1st, 2011

CC Sabathia The New York Yankees have wrapped up the month of June winning 18 games and hope to keep the momentum rolling as they get closer to August, where the play-off picture begins to take shape. The 18 wins in a month is the largest sine last July, when the Bronx Bombers took 19 contests.

The 18 wins in June must be considered the biggest accomplishment for the New York Yankees this year, considering the players that they had on the field this month. Jeter missed half of the month with his calf strain that landed him on the D.L. Bartolo Colon and Phil Hughes dropped out of the rotation with their own respective injuries. Plus, Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada were looking terrible entering the month.

Everything turned around with Posada and Swisher as they provided the core of many of the Yankee routs. But credit has to be given to Mark Teixeira, who is leading the Major League in home-runs after a blast against the Brewers on Thursday. The same home-run was his 300th of his career.

CC Sabathia has put the team on his back in terms of pitching. He has been stellar against the National League teams, which provides flashbacks of his Milwaukee Brewers days. On Thursday, he pitched a gem against his former team. He went 7.2 innings and struck-out 13, a career high.

The Yankees picked up one of their former players this weekend in Sergio Mitre. Mitre will most likely be used as a long reliever, but he hasn't been assigned his role yet. He did warm-up in the bullpen yesterday, to the delight of many fans that led his name to trend on Twitter Wednesday night.

Yankee Injury Updates: Derek Jeter appears to be on track to return to the Yankees for a road series in Cleveland. He has two games in Trenton this weekend before returning.

Mark Prior has begun his throwing and could throw batting practice for the Wilkes-Barre Yankees (AAA) this weekend.

Rafael Soriano (Elbow Inflammation) started his rehab with long toss exercises.

The Yankees will now take on the New York Mets in a Subway Series match-up in Flushing.
