New York Yankees Round-Up July 16th, 2011: Trade Deadline Targets, Soriano, & Colon

Ubaldo The New York Yankees have dropped two straight contests against the Toronto Blue Jays out of the gates after the All-Star Break. Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia were the two starters and failed to deliver quality starts. The inconsistent outings by the two starters have the Yankees front office looking for a pitcher to add to the staff as the trade deadline approaches. George King of the New York Post has highlighted the following players as the prime targets for the Yankees: Ubaldo Jimenez (Colorado Rockies), Matt Garza (Chicago Cubs), Jeremy Guthrie (Baltimore Orioles), Francisco Liriano (Minnesota Twins), and Anibal Sanchez (Florida Marlins).

There are also reports that the Yankees have been taking a good look at Heath Bell of the San Diego Padres. New York passed on Francisco Rodriguez from the Mets but may seem more likely to accept a deal for a 2011 All-Star reliever like Bell. The main issue that could arise is the fact that the bullpen is starting to get crowded.

Rafael Soriano is set to start his rehab assignment on Tuesday. David Robertson is holding down the eighth inning nicely for Mariano Rivera and as a result earned All-Star honors. The Yankees signed JC Romero to a minor league deal and could soon call him up to assist Boone Logan with being the lefty specialist. The Yankees arms will be out in full force for the remainder of the season.

As the deadline approaches here are some news updates to keep in mind:

-Hideki Kuroda is on the trading block for the Dodgers and the Yankees are looking for pitching. That seems like a good match, but the thing is that Kuroda says he would prefer to avoid the East Coast baseball teams. He is not having his best year and the Yankees would have to be ready to see the negative aspects of their risk in taking a struggling National League pitcher.

-The Yankees have no interest in trading for Carlos Beltran. Beltran has been linked to the Bronx Bombers since before he was signed by the Mets. He was even willing to take a smaller salary to join the team, but the Yankees stand firm in not wanting him.

-The Yankees could use a big bat and CC Sabathia has started his courting for Prince Fielder. He could play designated hitter for the Yankees in the absence of Alex Rodriguez. The deal seems very unlikely, but the best part about this is the fact that Sabathia is speaking in a way that shows he wants to stay in New York for a while. The Yankees will be working on his new contract as soon as their season ends.
