Is Ubaldo Jimenez Really On The Reds Radar?

Jimenez Tom Groeschan reported in his article "Will Reds be buyers or sellers" that Tuesday, Fox sports reported that the Reds have Colorado Rockies pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez on their radar.

My question is, do the Reds really need another struggling starter in their already deep rotation? Jimenez is currently 4-8 with an 4.14 ERA and 1.30 WHIP. To make matter worse, since the 2010 All-Star break, he is 8-15 with an ERA of approximately 4 and  a 1.30 WHIP.

I am not alone in thinking the Reds really do not need to add Jimenez or any other pieces for that matter.

Groeschen reported that Tim McCarver, FOX television spoke highly of the Reds before the All-Star  game Tuesday.

"There's still solace for a Reds fan in thinking that the rest of the division hasn't played real well. McCarver said. "Whether it's parity or otherwise, the Reds still have a legitimate shot."

Groeschen also reported that former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin believes the Reds probably don't need a major trade.

"You talk about the one thing they might need, and I don't know what that is," Larken said. "Because of inconsistent play in different phases of the game, there isn't one identifiable trait that would make this team that much better."

Harold Reynolds, MLB Network, believes left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman could be the difference for the Reds.

"Having Chapman healthy can be the strongest addition for any of the NL Central contenders," Reynolds said. "It seems like he's figured things out and now has the potential of being a shutdown reliever in the second half. Adding a top-flight left-handed reliever at the deadline is something teams dream of. With Chapman, Cincinnati is doing just that."

Despite the opinion of these analyst, according to, the Reds are among teams most likely to seek a new left fielder. But, as Groeschen pointed out, the pool is shallow with potential targets including Josh Willingham, Ryan Ludwick, Luke Scott and David Dejesus.

In addition to MLBTradeRumors, according to Groeschen, Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty is talking with other clubs in an attempt to improve the club.

"We are currently talking with several clubs, and trying to evaluate whether or not we will be able to improve our club." Jocketty said.

This is basically the same team that won the National League Central Championship in 2010, and while there is room for improvement, I just don't see Jimenez as the answer.
