Yankee Bats Bash Brew Crew 12-2

Screen shot 2011-06-29 at 12.13.24 PM Zach Greinke use to be at the top of some of the Yankee executive's wish list, when it came to players they wanted to acquire. When he was with the Kansas City Royals in 2009, he won the American League Cy Young Award, which increased his value even more. But on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, Greinke was in a different uniform and looked like a different pitcher. The Yankees pounced on the Brewer's ace early and capitalized on defensive mistakes to take an early lead that they would never look back on for a 12-2 win.

Greinke was in trouble right from the first inning when Nyjer Morgan slipped in the outfield which resulted in Curtis Granderson's hit to become an RBI triple. Mark Teixeira was able to produce runs with ground-outs early in the game, but then capped his night with a two-run home-run into the second deck. The home-run tied him with Jose Bautista for the MLB lead.

Teixeira went yard the last three nights, while his teammate Nick Swisher is on a similar streak with two home-runs in two games. Swisher's home-run brought around three runs to score for the Yankees.

The offense was clearly present for Swisher, but he also shone in the defensive side of the game with a throw out at home of Corey Hart from right field. Freddy Garcia was the Yankee starter and he most definitely appreciated the help he got from his teammates on both sides. He pitched a solid game going six innings and only allowing two runs for the quality start.

Greinke was just not himself on the mound at Yankee Stadium. He pitched two innings and surrendered seven runs. There are several factors that could be pointed at to his bad start.

1) It is New York and in the past it has been revealed that Greinke does not thrive in a big atmosphere. But Tuesday night was a regular night game with not that electrifying of a crowd, so that couldn't really be the reason.

2) It has been a while since the Brewers' ace pitched against such a potent line-up in the American League like the New York Yankees'.

3) The defense was not present for him. Morgan's slip cost Greinke. A missed tag by McGehee, at third to get Alex Rodriguez for the out, came around to score. There was an odd shift on Rodriguez, when he was at-bat and that led to a hit by him. There were no errors charged to any of the Brewers, so it all inflated Greinke's ERA.

The Yankee win puts them a game and a half over the Boston Red Sox in the American League East. The Yankees take on the Brewers again at Yankee Stadium tonight as AJ Burnett faces off against Shaun Marcum.
