Waltrip to honor brother's HOF induction in home state

Michael Waltrip will make a rare appearance behind the wheel of a Sprint Cup Series race car next weekend when the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series makes its debut at Kentucky Speedway on July 9 with the running of the Quaker State 400. Waltrip is a native of Owensboro, Ky.

While racing in his home state, Waltrip will honor his brother, Darrell Waltrip, for his induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in January 2012 by running a special paint scheme on his No. 15 car.

“I guess this (his brother’s Hall of Fame induction) means more to me than maybe it does a lot of people, because I know the road that he traveled to get to the Hall of Fame,” Michael Waltrip said. “I’m so happy for him. We all have role models, especially as kids, and sometimes those role models let us down. Darrell has always been my role model and my hero every since I was a little boy, and he’s never let me down.”

The orange and white car Waltrip plans to race at Kentucky will look similar to the Terminal Transport-sponsored car Darrell Waltrip drove to victory lane after his first Sprint Cup Series win at Nashville Speedway in 1975.

The rear quarter panel on each side of the car will feature a photo from that 1975 victory lane celebration. A picture of Darrell Waltrip will also don the hood.

“What a great photo,” Michael Waltrip said of the victory lane photo. “And I was there. Seeing it still makes me smile. This was when all the winning started and led Darrell to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.”

The Quaker State 400 is slated to get underway at approximately 7:30 p.m. ET on July 9. It can be seen live on TNT.
