USA Gets Past Guadeloupe, Jamaica Up Next

The USA defeated Guadeloupe 1-0 in it’s last group stage match to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2011 Gold Cup, where they will face Group B winners Jamaica. The quarterfinal game is set to take place at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, on Sunday, June 19th at 3:00PM. With Panama’s last second tie against Canada earlier in the evening, the US finished runners-up in Group C on six points, while Panama finished in first with seven.

The USA got their goal from a Jozy Altidore rocket from about 25 yards out in the ninth minute, and from that point on it looked like it was going to be an easy night for Bob Bradley’s men. And it turned out to be a fairly easy night, and the game never looked in doubt for the USA, but they did blow multiple chances in front of net.

Even though they only won 1-0, the USA played a much better game than they did against Panama on Saturday night. They controlled the ball for much of the game, while Guadeloupe never mustered much of an offensive threat. The defense played well, not giving up any real chances all night. Steve Cherundolo had to be one of the best players for the USA, sweeping up and down the right side from his right back position, putting in nice crosses and making himself a presence all over the field. The only scare for the USA defense was in the first two minutes, when they failed to clear a corner that fell to the foot of a Guadeloupe player inside the area. Thank goodness for Eric Lichaj’s toe that got a piece of the shot to force it onto the cross bar and over the net.

However, the real point of emphasis that should be made tonight, is how on earth did the US only manage to score 1 goal? They dominated the match, and had chance after chance for goals in the game. Clint Dempsey himself had about eight or ten shots, and should have had a tap in if it wasn’t for his showboating in the second half. Dempsey settled a cross right in front of net, and instead of just tapping it in from three yards out, he tried to settle the ball and dribble it in. While he was about to tap it in, a Guadeloupe defender came to sweet the ball away and out of danger.

The lack of scoring from the US tonight worries me a bit, because their probably going to need to score more than 1 goal in their remaining matches if they want to win the Gold Cup. So many missed opportunities against a good team, such as Jamaica who are playing extremely well so far this tournament, and they’ll be punished for it.
