USA Defeats Jamaica 2-0, Sets Up Rematch Against Panama

The United States men’s soccer team will get their chance at revenge Wednesday night, when they take on Panama in the Gold Cup semifinals in Houston, Texas. After defeating Jamaica in the quarterfinals yesterday, the Americans are one step closer to setting up their dream final against Mexico, to see who reigns supreme in CONCACAF.

The US won the game from goals by Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey, and after Jamaica was reduced to 10 men in the 66th minute, the game was never in doubt for the USA. They probably should have added more goals late, but 2-0 is good enough for any fan in what was a must-win game for Bob Bradley.

Bob Bradley’s decision to not start Landon Donovan caused quite a stir, but it ended up being a choice that didn’t cost him in the end. Jozy Altidore was substituted within the first ten minutes because of a hamstring injury, which brought on Juan Agudelo as his replacement.

With Altidore injured, the USA played a 4-5-1 formation, with five midfielders and only one forward. In my opinion, its probably better that we play with five midfielders, because with Altidore‘s status in doubt, our attack is basically down to just Agudelo. The additions of Sacha Klejstian and Alejandro Bedoya brought a little more creativity in the midfield, which allowed Michael Bradley and Jermaine Jones to play more of a defensive role.

I’m still not convinced with the finishing ability of the USA, but they do manage to score goals, even if they aren’t pretty. Take away Jones deflection goal, that was pretty much all luck, and they only managed to score one other goal via Dempsey.

It was nice to see Freddy Adu atleast make the bench, and its interesting how Alejandro Bedoya went from not making the team, to starting the quarterfinals. Just one of the many questions a fan asks themselves when they look at the decisions a coach makes.

Bob Bradley pushed all the right buttons against Jamaica, and he will have to do the same in the semi-final against Panama. Losing once against Panama was shocking enough, but to lose twice to them in a matter of 11 days, would be catastrophic. Bradley is just one win away from the final, and he can’t slip up now, or else his job may be on the line.
