The Phils suffer an extra-inning walk-off lost as they lose to the Bucos, 2-1.
The Phils suffer another lost in the Pirates’ new home as they suffer an extra-inning, walk-off lost to their cross-state rivals, the Pirates, losing 2-1 in twelve innings.
The Phils scratch across a run in the sixth as, with a runner on second, and with two men out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had earlier singled, then stole second, giving the Phils a 1-0 lead. The Pirates got the run back in their half of the sixth without getting a hit as, with a man on third, and with one man out, Jose Tabata hits a sacrifice fly, scoring Ronny Cedeno, who had earlier walked, went to second base on Jeff Karstens’ sacrifice bunt, 3-4, then went to third on Cole Hamels’ wild pitch, tying the game up at one-all. That would stay the score, in spite of the Pirates threatening to score in the 9th, 10th and 11th innings. Then in the twelfth, with two men out, the Pirates threaten again as Xavier Paul got on base with a single, before stealing second base, placing himself in scoring position. Tabata then hits a single to right, with Paul crossing the plate as the ball gets past Carlos Ruiz, giving the Pirates a 2-1 walk-off, extra-innings win.
Cole Hamels received a no-decision as he went eight innings, giving up a run on one hit and three walks, while striking out four. Jose Contreras, Antonio Bastardo and Michael Stutes combine for three scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Contreras (1), Stutes (1)) and four walks (Contreras (1), Bastardo (2), Stutes (1)), between them, as all three seems to be having trouble finding the strike zone. Danys Baez (1-3, 4.33) took the lost as he pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up a run on two hits, as he struck out a batter. Jeff Karstens also received a no-decision as he pitched seven inning, giving up a run on four hits, while he struck out two. Evan Meek, Joel Hanrahan and Daniel McCutchen combine for four scoreless innings, giving up two hits (Meek) and two walks (Hanrahan (1), McCutchen(1)), while striking out two (Hanrahan (1), McCutchen (1)), between them. Daniel Moskos (1-0, 0.00) got the win as he pitched a 1-2-3 inning.
The Phils had just six hits in the game, all singles, with Jimmy Rollins and Cole Hamels both leading the team with two hits each. Placido Planco and Chase Utley (RBI), had the other two Phils’ hits, as the team was handcupped by Pirates’ pitching, in spite of hitting a lot of hard balls, which, sadly, were caught.
The Phils (34-22, 1st East) will continue their series with the Pirates (27-29, 4th Central) with a night game tonight at PNC Park. The game will start at 7:05 pm EDT. The Phils will send to the mound Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 3.38), who last pitched on May 29, in relief, againt the Mets, going three innings, giving up a run on three hits, while striking out two, in the Phils’ 9-5 lost. He will be trying for his second strong spot start, while trying to see if he can end the Phils’ three-game losing streak. The Pirates will counter with Charlie Morton (5-2, 2.51), who is coming off a no-decision against the Mets on May 30, as he went six innings, giving up three runs, only one of which was earned, on eleven scattered hits, as he struck out four, in the Pirates’ 7-3 lost. He will be trying to come back from that start. The Phils will be trying to end their present losing streak, while also hoping to reverse their losing record at PNC Park.
