Joe Theismann Defends Jay Cutler, Insults Earl Bennett
Fred Mitchell, Chicago Tribune, reported in his article "Theismann: Let Cutler be Cutler" that Joe Theismann believes Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was unfairly criticized for sitting out most of the second half of the NFC Championship Game.
" I just felt like Jay was treated very, very wrongly by other guys in the game," Theismann told the Tribune. "What nobody wants to talk about is that here's a guy that actually went back out on the field andtried to play. It wasn't like he told the coaches" 'Hey, look, I can't do anything. I can't play."
Mitchell also reported that Theismann said it's clear what Cutler needs most.
"What the Bears need is a wide receiver, he said. "Let me tell you, Jay Cutler is the least of that offense's problems. You need somebody to throw the football to.
According to Brad Briggs, Chicago Tribune, the chatter that the Bears need help and could be in the market for receiver help is not sitting well with Earl Bennett.
"It's very insulting because it seems as if we're not getting the job done, and that's definitely not the case in our opinion," said Bennett.
In order to prepare for the season, the last one of his contract, Bennett has been doing some work in the Chicago area with Cutler and some skill position players. He believes this will enable him to come in and compete for a starting position, something he was not able to do last season because of injuries.
Apparently, Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz is planning to get Bennett more involved.
"We didn't throw it to him enough, "Martz said on the Bears website. "That will be remedied."
Briggs also reported the Bears offensive skill players are meeting regularly for workouts, making sure they remain crisp. Apparently tight end Brandon Manumaleuna and Chester Taylor are the only players not attending regularly. Manumaleuna is recovering from knee surgery and Taylor typically does his own thing during the offseason, dating back to his days with Minnesota.
