USA Gold Cup Roster Announced

Yesterday afternoon, USA head coach Bob Bradley announced the 23 man roster for next month’s Gold Cup. With no Confederations Cup this time around to keep the first team choices out of the competition, Bradley had everyone from the player pool to choose from.

The regulars, Donovan, Howard, Dempsey, Bocanegra, Onyewu, etc. were expected to be called in for the tournament. However, there were a few surprises that had many skeptics and US national team fans grumbling.

For one, Freddy Adu got a call up to the national team after having not played for the US in two years. Apparently Bob Bradley thinks playing well enough in the Turkish second league warrants a call up to the national team. Many would have rather seen Edson Buddle, who played at the last World Cup in South Africa, or Teal Bunbury, a rising young MLS star with plenty of potential. I would have like to seen Charlie Davies make a comeback.

But for me personally, I don’t have a problem with calling up Adu. He’s only 21, and it just seems like he’s older because he’s been around forever. Granted he hasn’t been tearing it up over the years, but his confidence has grown this past year, and maybe a stint in the Turkish second league has allowed him to mature. I hope Freddy gets some playing time and does well in the tournament, so we can finally see all that potential and hype from years ago come forward.

Chris Wondolowski was the MLS’s Golden Boot winner last season, but I think you have to give that roster spot to Charlie Davies. Fans have been dying to see him back in the national team squad, and after coming back from that horrible accident, it would have been awesome to see him back in the fold.

Another interesting note was how Bradley decided to only bring three forwards with him to the tournament. Without a proven goal scorer, I would have figured that Bob Bradley would have brought four or five with him, instead of bringing nine midfielders. With an already crowded midfield, did Bradley really have to call up Robbie Rogers? Instead of bringing Rogers, another forward could have been picked. Rogers probably won’t even get that much playing time, if any, with Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley etc. ahead of him. The choice of Rogers is basically a wasted roster spot in my opinion.

And as far as the Timothy Chandler exclusion goes, he probably isn’t 100% committed to playing for the United States. He still might be thinking about playing for Germany, and I can’t blame Bob Bradley for not calling him up if that’s the case. If Bradley didn’t choose him because he thought Robbie Rogers was better, then that’s a completely different story.

Only time will tell however, and in just under a month we’ll know whether or not Bradley was right or wrong to pick the players that he did. The US shouldn’t have much trouble in the group stage of the tournament, but as the Gold Cup progresses, and if we eventually play Mexico, there will be a lot of pressure on Bradley to get a win.
