MLB Opinion: MLB and Cancer
For several years I have discussed my theory about brain cancer and MLB players. Losing two Philadelphia Phillies favorites in Tug McGraw and John Vuchovich to brain cancer, then considering that Ken Brett, Vern Ruhle, Joe Niekro, Dick Howser, and Dan Quisenberry all died of brain cancer makes one wonder what is causing the disease to be so widespread among major league baseball players.
Former MLB pitcher Robert Tufts explored cancer and MLB in an article on Monday that caught my eye. Tufts went beyond brain cancer and identified players that had other types of cancer as well at young ages.
Originally, I looked at Veteran's Stadium as a possible reason for so many brain cancer diagnosis's. Consider that McGraw, Vuchovich, Brett, and Ruhle all spent considerable time there. But then you see how many of these men spent time in Kansas City and it blows the theory.
The bottom line though is that major league baseball needs to look into what has caused so much brain cancer. Was it the water? Was it a chemical being used on the field? Or was it a supplement that they may have been taking? Any way you look at it, it is scary and has caused some sad losses to the MLB family.
