2011 NFL draft in review: Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans felt they needed a better option at QB, and given all the problems they have had they decided they needed one with high character. That forced them into a position where they had to use the 8th overall pick on QB Jake Locker. Had Jake come out in 2010 he would have been the first overall pick, but another year at Washington really exposed some holes in his game.
His big flaws are is rawness and his need to improve his accuracy. Many question if the NFL is the best place for him to work on those problems. Even though we all know, right now, that Locker will need time to develop there will be tremendous pressure to start before he is ready. That of course could get a lot of coaches and front office types fired.
With the 39th overall pick in the second round the Titans selected OLB Akeem Ayers out of UCLA. They will look for him to come in and produce right away, but he has a tendency to not play hard on every play and the Titans will need him to play hard from the first whistle of 2011 to the last.
Most think Ayers will develop into a starter in a proper environment and in the right situation but I have serious doubts that Tennessee right now is any of that. Hopefully I am wrong and this team gets the production out of these two picks that it will need to jump start their rebuilding process.
With that being said here is a look at the initial grades for the 2011 Titans draft class:
- Round One- B, Locker could turn into a star
- Round Two- B-, I think this team reached for both of these players
- Need- B+, QB and OLB were among their pressing needs
- Talent, D, both players had third round grades and they were taken high in rounds 1&2
- Average- C+, but this class may have some upside
