Yogi Berra: “It's Deja Vu All Over Again" and His 25 Greatest Quotes

In addition to his baseball abilities, Berra is also famous for his quotes. These witticisms, known as Yogi-isms, are known and loved by many baseball fans. Some of these quotes are among the most famous of all quotes in baseball and are used over and over by announcers.

As a fun fact, Yogi Berra also used to own a house in my hometown. There are rumors that he buried a home plate under the carpet in the basement of that house.

All quotes come either from the Yogi Berra Museum, Yogi Berra’s website, Baseball Almanac, Retro Galaxy, or Brainy Quote.

25) “So I’m ugly. I’ve never seen anyone hit with his face”

It is clear that Berra can take insults. It was a brilliant move on his part to relate that there is no correlation between attractiveness and hitting ability.

24) “I always thought that record would stand until it was broken”

Breaking a record still remains the only way to take it off the books.

23) “If you don’t know where you’re going, you might end up some place else”

This is certainly true. You will most definitely end up some place different from where you are.

22) "You have to give 100 percent in the first half of the game. If that isn't enough, in the second half, you have to give what is left."

I’m no math major, but I’m pretty sure that if you give everything you have in the first half, you have nothing left for the second half.

21) “Always go to other people’s funerals otherwise they won’t go to yours”

If people whose funerals you attended show up at yours, your guests will be in for a big surprise.

20) “You better cut the pizza in four pieces because I'm not hungry enough to eat six”

Unfortunately for Yogi, it was still the same amount of pizza no matter how many slices it was cut into.

19) “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore”

And it never was. However, as coin collectors know, there are some nickels that are worth a lot more than a dime now.

18) “We have deep depth”

This is a great problem for a baseball team to have. They will be able to replace player upon player with their depth.

17) “He hits from both sides of the plate. He’s amphibious”

That would be a great advantage if they ever decided to play a game of baseball while underwater.

16) “Half the lies they tell about me aren’t true”

Would it also be fair to believe that half of the facts about Berra aren’t true either?

15) “All pitchers are liars or crybabies”

This is true. Pitchers think that every pitch that they throw is a strike or that the batter went around. They also complain to the umps when they don’t get calls.

14) “The future ain’t what it used to be”

Maybe Berra hopped in Doc Brown’s time machine and saw one version of the future. However, he may have altered the space-time continuum, which would explain this quote.

13) “We made too many wrong mistakes”

I try using a similar excuse with my parents whenever I do poorly on an exam. It doesn’t work.

12) “I didn’t really say everything I said”

Then who did? Did Yogi have someone talking for him all of these years?

11) “I usually take a two hour nap from one to four”

It should be becoming clear that math was not Yogi’s forte.

10) “Pair up in threes”

This one ranks right up there with the Bill Peterson “lineup alphabetically by height” quote.

9) “It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility”

This is a simple mix-up by Berra, but it is a classic.

8) “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is”

Theoretically speaking, this does make sense. In theory everything should work in practice based on theory. However, reality rarely ever occurs according to theory.

7) “I think little league is wonderful. It keeps the kids out of the house”

I’d hate to be one of Berra’s kids if he was that happy just to get them out of the house for a few hours.

6) “If you ask me anything I don’t know, I’m not going to answer”

It would be nice if Yogi would just let people know that he didn’t know.  It seems as if he’s just thinking about it if he doesn’t give a response.

5) “I’m not going to buy my kids an encyclopedia. Let them walk to school like I did”

I get what Yogi’s going for with this quote. However, just simply reading an encyclopedia is not a replacement for going to school. It will however make you very good at Jeopardy.

4) “When you come to a fork in the road, take it”

Some say that this statement has the most philosophical value. It is suggested that when at a difficult decision, people should make a choice and not look back.

There actually is truth to this quote. It is based on driving directions to his home in Montclair.  Regardless of which way you go, you get to Yogi’s home.

3) “Baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical”

I feel like I’ve said this before, but math isn’t Yogi’s thing. Ninety percent plus fifty percent is one hundred forty percent.

2) “It’s Like Déjà vu All Over Again”

Since Déjà vu is the feeling that one has already had the experience that they are currently having, this must mean that Berra already had the experience twice.

1) “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over”

Unfortunately for all you readers, this article is now over.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOGI.

Happy Birthday Yogi

Happy birthday Yogi! I rented several cars to you for a commercial for the Tri-county Ford dealers back in 93 here in Homestead Florida. I had the pleasure of talking baseball with you throughout the day. It's bigger than the biggest was the Yogi-ism used in that commercial. I still have the 8 x 10 black and white picture of you that you sent me. Thanks Yogi! I'll treasure it forever.

I think what Yogi mean't in quote number 5 is that the kids would ride an encyclopedia to school not read one.

It's funny how Yogi Berra has transended sports. No longer just a baseball player from the good old days like Babe Ruth he has taken on a much bigger persona and that is not just in NY.

What a great read.

you missed one of yogis' great quotes: talking about
a busy restaurant he said "nobody goes there anymore
it's too crowded".

Oh, for the love of Mike. Is all of America irony impaired? Two points bear making. 1. Yogi-isms are to be enjoyed, not analyzed like a poem in a 10th grade Lit class.
2. Yogi was and is a better than partly smart guy. Most, if not all, of his 'mis-speakments' are intentional. Remember that this is the man who bought the company that put all the soda machines in The Stadium, including the ones in the clubhouses. Every time Whitey grabbed a bottle of Yoo-hoo, Yogi cashed a check.
