Travis Wood Baffels Brewers Hitters, Leading The Reds To Victory
Saturday night the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2, behind a near perfect outing from Travis Wood (1-0 1.28).
Wood was hitting his spots all night, going seven strong innings, allowing one run on four hits, while striking out seven and walking none.
The Reds were led offensively by Scott Rolen and Drew Stubbs. Rolen gave Woods all the runs he would need in the bottom of the second with a two run shot into the seats in left field, while Stubbs reached base three times.
The Reds extend the lead to 4-0 in the second and led 4-1 when Francisco Cordero came on in the ninth to close. Cordero was very shaky and if not for some good defense from shortstop Edgar Renteria and second baseman Brandon Phillips may have blown Woods master piece.
Brewers starter Shaun Marcum (0-1 6.00) struggled with his command and the Reds took advantage, scoring four runs on four hits and five walks off him.
Milwaukee right fielder Erik Almonte and first baseman Prince Fielder were the only Brewers to have any luck off Wood. Almonte led off the fifth with a long homerun into the upper deck in left, while fielder connected on two cheap hits into center field.
Tomorrow afternoon the Reds (2-0) will try and sweep the Brewers (0-2). They'll send right-hander Bronson Arroyo against Brewers lefty Randy Wolf.
