Remembering the Great Harry Kalas

Harry Kalas
Two years ago today Philadelphia Phillies fans lost their voice. The great Harry Kalas passed away before a game in Washington DC. It seems like only yesterday yet it seems like forever since Harry left us.

Below is a tribute video called "Outta Here" written, sung, and created by a fan, a poem I wrote after Harry's passing, and a few links from's writers when Harry died. Share your thoughts and memories of Harry in the comments section.

Ode to Harry Kalas

by Bill Zeltman 4/17/2009

Very few can capture our heart even with great bat or glove,
But Harry Kalas was family in the city of brotherly love.
His boyish excitement heard every time he made a call,
Especially the words "outta here" when the Phils hit one over the wall.
His love for baseball and the Phillies came out in every play,
Generations of fans learned the game from what he would say.
From his days with Whitey and Willie Wilsons final out,
Calling Michael Jack and Lefty while giving fans a birthday shout.
To the days of '93 and a rendition of "High Hopes",
Calling Lenny and Kruker watching Schilling learn the ropes.
We saw his heart and emotion when Richie Ashburn had died,
We listened and mourned as he called the game and cried.
We cheered for him and were proud when he was inducted in the hall,
We knew his golden voice was all too good not to get the call.
He realized a dream calling the World Series win in '08,
His Phillies were again on top and everything was great.
But now the voice is gone, we are all sad and weep,
We miss his call every day and after a three game sweep.
It will never be the same without Harry at the mic,
But all who heard will never forget him from older adult to tyke.
Harry and Whitey are now together probably at a game in the sky,
Whitey telling a joke and Harry calling a long fly.
Harry we love you and will miss you every single game.
There will be a smile and tear every time we hear your name.
