Red Sox and Adrian Gonzalez Agree on a 7 Year Deal
The Boston Red Sox have a first baseman for the better part of the decade after agreeing to a 7 year $154 million deal with Adrian Gonzalez that begins in 2012 and takes him through the 2018 season.
The deal was made now because the Red Sox wanted to wait to see how Gonzalez was after shoulder surgery but not wait long enough for the slugger to decide to test free agency. Boston also waited until the season began because it was to their advantage in paying less of baseball's luxury tax. They are only taxed based on the $6.2 million that was the contract Gonzalez had to start the season.
Gonzalez, 28, is a career .284 hitter with 169 homeruns and 532 RBI's in 858 games.
