Phillies outfielders trying to show their Werth
It is the 16th game of the season and John Mayberry, Jr. will get the start in rightfield.
Ben Francisco was the heir apparent to the departed Jayson Werth.
But after winning the job in the spring, Francisco has gone 2 for his last 18 and has gone 32 plate appearances without an extra-base hit.
Until Domonic Brown comes back, Francisco will get the majority of the time in right field.
Manager Charlie Manuel likes to get his bench players starting time and Mayberry is the last.
Mayberry also had a good spring, tying Ryan Howard with five home runs.
He also had his day in the sun on opening day but hitting the game-winning single.
The talk about Mayberry has been that he will never be an every-day player.
Holy Wally Pipp. (Check Lou Gehrig on Wikipedia).
I kinda like Mayberry’s game, but he will not prove himself in one game.
Mayberry, according to Inquirer writer Frank Gelb will hit sixth behind Raul Ibanez.
He is giving Francisco a break and may play for Ibanez tomorrow.
That is enough of a short look at Mayberry.
Give him a chance, you will like his game. He is not particulary fast, not slow, but he has some pop to his bat.
Randy Wolf faces Roy Halladay tonight, while it’s Cliff Lee against Chris Narveson in the business person’s special on Wednesday afternoon.
