MLB News: MLB Injury Roundup 4/23/11
The injury mill continued today as Chipper Jones and Justin Morneau were just a few of the names to find there way on our report.
MTRbaseball.com reported earlier that Chipper Jones was having an issue with his right knee. His left knee caused Jones to miss much of the 2010 season and is cause for concern for Atlanta Braves fans. Read the full story here. Meanwhile slugger Justin Morneau returns to the Minnesota Twins lineup tonight after missing the last 5 games with a stiff neck and the flu. Morneau will play first base.
Johnny Damon has a hairline fracture in his left ring finger. The Tampa Bay Rays will not have to replace him in the lineup for now though as Damon will play through the injury. Meanwhile Cincinnati Reds third baseman Scott Rolen missed Friday night's game and is day to day after receiving a cortisone shot for soreness in his left shoulder, neck, and back. Rolen said the shoulder has been bothering him since they played the Padres last week. This is the same shoulder that Rolen has had issues with since 2005 when he had surgery on it. An MRI came back negative. Rolen is only hitting .217 for the season.
The Los Angeles Angels have placed relief pitcher Scott Downs on the disabled list because of stomach issues caused by food poisoning. Downs has only pitched in 2 games this year as he missed the first two weeks of the season with a broken toe. He has not pitched since April 13 so his 15 game stint on the DL is retroactive to then.
Seattle Mariners Franklin Gutierrez also has been the victim of stomach problems. His problems have been so bad that he has been on the disabled list since before opening day and went to the Mayo Clinic for answers. The prognosis is irritable bowel syndrome. He was prescribed medicine and will begin working out in the next few days with the hopes of returning to action by the end of the month.
The Texas Rangers got some good news as Brandon Webb is scheduled to pitch two innings in an extended Spring Training game on Monday, but the news was not all good for the AL Champions as Neftali Feliz was placed on the disabled list with a rotator cuff issue. The shoulder area is inflamed and the Rangers are proceeding with caution with the 23 year old.
New York Mets pitcher Chris Young is set to return the the team on Tuesday after recovering from bicep tendonitis while Yankees pitcher Phil Hughes is scheduled to start his first rehab assignment on Thursday. Hughes had seen his velocity drop and was put on the DL with a dead arm.
