MLB News: Around the Majors Injury Report 4/25/2011

Injure-100_bigger.gif Some big names appear on today's injury report including Albert Puhols, Philadelphia Phillies closer Jose Contreras, Cincinnati Reds third basemen Scott Rolen, and Toronto Blue Jays Aaron Hill.

The St Louis Cardinals days of having Albert Puhols in their lineup may have gotten even shorter. Puhols will be sidelined for at least a few days with what is being called a minor hamstring injury. There is a chance that Puhols will sit out the team's upcoming series with the Astros. Maybe he can use the down time to consider a contract extension. Not likely!

The Phillies now have two closers on the disabled list as Jose Contreras was diagnosed with a strained right flexor pronator tendon. Contreras will fly to Philadelphia today to be examined by the team's doctor. An MRI has not been scheduled yet but could be after his initial examination. Ryan Madson will take over as the team's closer. He saved 2 games in 2 opportunities over the weekend.

Scott Rolen is still having shoulder issues and the Reds have decided to place the former All Star on the 15 day disabled list. The 36 year old has had chronic issues with his shoulder and it would be naive to think that he will only miss 15 games. Juan Francisco and Miguel Cairo are Rolen's logical replacements.

Aaron Hill's hamstring is still bothering him so the Blue Jays placed him on the 15 disabled list retroactive to April 20. Mike McCoy should see the bulk of playing time in Hill's absence.

After Maicer Izturis told the media that fans were “ignorant people” who “don’t know the game" by saying his was not durable, the Los Angeles Angels had to sit him out yesterday's lineup with hamstring soreness. After playing in only a little more then half of the teams over the past 3 seasons, Izturis maybe should have considered keeping his thoughts to himself. Maybe the Angels fans do know the game after all!

In good news, White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy looked good throwing 40 pitches in a bullpen session on Sunday. Meanwhile Evan Longoria took live batting practice and said he felt great, He will take a few more days of BP before heading out for a rehab assignment.

On a minor league note, Boston Red Sox Triple A prospect Ryan Kalish suffered a shoulder injury diving for a ball. He was diagnosed with a partially torn labrum. The 23 year old is probably facing season ending surgery although he will try to rehab it first.
