Henry Shines as New York Trounces DC United 4-0

Well my prediction yesterday was way off, but there were plenty of goals in last night’s MLS game of the week on ESPN2. I predicted a 3-2 DC United win over the New York Red Bulls, but the Red Bulls proved me wrong by dominating DC United for much of the match.

Thierry Henry scored two first half goals, and Joel Lindpere and Juan Agudelo added second half goals to see the victors through. Agudelo’s goal in stoppage time was a fantastic one, and any USA soccer fan should be excited with the brilliant skill he showed in front of goal.

The Red Bulls showed in this match why they have the potential to be the best team in Major League Soccer. On both of Henry’s goals, the team showed great passing and crossing ability down the right side, with Jan Gunnar Solli and Dane Richards combining to feed Henry for two goals.

DC United had a couple of chances in the first half through Charlie Davies. In the 22nd minute, Davies was through on goal but a heavy touch forced his shot wide as New York Red Bull keeper Bouna Coundoul came out to make a save.

Then in the 72nd minute, DC United midfielder Branko Boskovic almost pulled one back for his club after his free kick from about 25 yards out hit the crossbar. This was probably DC United’s best chance of the game, as goalie Bouna Coundoul was well beaten. As DC kept pressing for the later stages of the second half, Boskovic hit the post again in the 89th minute.

Throughout the match, you could tell that the Red Bulls had more talent than their opposition. DC United showed some heart in the second half, and you could hand it to them that they never quit on themselves, even after down 3-0. But sometimes, too much talent can overshadow heart and grit. And you have to give the Red Bulls credit for making the most of their chances. DC didn’t take advantage of their opportunities, and combine that with their lackluster defense throughout the match, you wind up with a recipe for disaster.

A very well played match for the NY Red Bulls though, as this game could really get the team running with a full head of steam. With the win, they climbed to first place in the Eastern Conference with 11 points. DC United remain fifth in the conference, with 7 points.
