Brian Burres Should Replace Injured Ross Ohlendorf

Burres Monday, Rob Biertempfel/Pittsburgh Tribune Review, reported that Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ross Ohlendorf is expected to be out until at least mid-May.

"Hopefully, I'll be back in about a month, "Ohlendorf said. "But it's still too early to really know for sure."

Brian Burres - Pirates best option to replace Ohlendorf

Biertempfel reported three options the Pirates have for replacing Ohlendorf:

1.Right-hander Jeff Karstens who is 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.60 WHIP with the Pirates.

2.Left-hander Brian Burres who is 0-2 with a 2.55 ERA and 1.08 WHIP with Indianapolis

3.Right-hander Brad Lincoln who is 0-2 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with Indianapolis.

Burres, who had a good spring and was the Pirates best starter the last month of 2010, should be the front runner. The Pirates could use another left-hander, besides Paul Maholm, in the rotation and Burres has demonstrated that he can get the job done.

Last September he was 2-1 with a 2.89 ERA and 1.27 WHIP and so far this season has pitched very well in AAA at Indianapolis.

Biertempfel noted that Burres is not on the 40-man roster and the Pirates would have to do some player shuffling to get him to Pittsburgh.

The Pirates bullpen is overworked and Karstens arm is not really ready to go any more than about five innings or 75 pitches. So the Karsten option should be out.

That leaves Lincoln, who has not performed as well as Burres and should be left in AAA to develop into the pitcher the Pirates hope he will become.

The Pirates need to do something by Friday, when they take on the Washington Nationals and have a void in the rotation. So, look for general manager Neal Huntington begin to do some shuffling to make room for Burres. Although,it appears Pirates manager Clint Hurdle and Huntington are in no hurry to anything.

"I'll pass on that (question)," Hurdle said on Sunday. "We'll wait and see."  Before last nights game against the Reds, Huntington said he has "not yet talked to Clint about that."

At this point, Burres appears to be the best choice and Hurdle & Huntington need to decide how to make room for him.
