USA Draws Easy Group In Gold Cup First Round
The United States Men’s National Team will kick-off their quest for a fifth Gold Cup title this summer on June 7th against neighbors to the north Canada.
The schedule and groups for this years Gold Cup were released earlier today, with the USA placed in Group C along with Canada, Panama, and Guadeloupe. Meanwhile, rivals Mexico got a much tougher draw, being matched up with El Salvador, Costa Rica, and Cuba in Group A. Group B rounds out the tournament, featuring Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, and Grenada.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Gold Cup, it is the regional championship held every 2 years for the teams of North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, and it the second biggest tournament that our national team competes in behind the World Cup.
The United States has won the tournament four times, (1991, 2002, 2005, 2007) and lost to Mexico 5-0 in the last final back in 2009. But back in 2009, the United States put out a relatively young squad with no big names, while Mexico basically had it’s A team similar to the one that played in the World Cup in South Africa.
As far as this year’s Gold Cup is concerned, no matter what USA team Bob Bradley puts out, they should have no problem making it to the final again. They should win every group game, seeing as the other teams in their group are ranked 60th (Panama), 80th (Canada), and 87th (Guadeloupe). And to tell you truth, I couldn’t even tell you where Guadeloupe is on a map, because I didn’t even know it existed.
With all that said, it will be interesting to see whether or not Bob Bradley brings his strongest squad to the Gold Cup, or whether he mixes in some young faces with the veterans. I hope that he doesn’t go with an entirely young squad with no superstars, but he might because the Gold Cup isn’t exactly the World Cup. I would like to see Donovan, Dempsey, Howard and the rest of the first teamers, but that’s solely on Bob’s shoulders.
