Driscoll's Quest
James Driscoll has just eagled the par-5 5th in Puerto Rico to move to 11-under par. That's right, 11-under.
Two 59's were shot on Tour last year, by Paul Goydos and Stuart Appleby, after an 11-year drought of 59s on Tour. If Driscoll can birdie two of his last four holes, he will reach that magic number. With three par-4s that all measure at least 430 yards and a 236-yard par 3, it won't be easy, but he is clearly playing some flawless golf so far.
The course measures 7,569 yards, and I don't have the data for sure, but I assume that nobody has ever shot a 59 on a course that long before in a PGA event. Maybe even on any course, anywhere?
The course this week is Trump International, one of Donald Trump's courses, and I'm interested to see how he would respond if a 59 were shot on his course. Would he be happy for the publicity, or upset at the notion that people would naturally see his course as easy?
Hopefully Trump will comment if the 59 is shot. But with the tough stretch of holes to come for Driscoll, don't bet on it. 11-under thru 14 is a heck of a start, though.
