Burnett and Yanks pitching strong in split squad doubleheader
A.J. Burnett threw 3 perfect innings in his second spring training start yesterday enroute to a 7-1 victory against the Phillies. He threw 45 pitches 30 of them were strikes he struckout Ryan Howard for his only strikeout. A.J. went 10-15 last season but so far in two spring starts he has pitched 5 innings allowing 0 earned runs and only 2 hits. The offense was provided by Eduardo Nunez who hit a 3 run homerun in the second inning and Curtis Granderson who hit a two run homerun in the third inning all off of Phillies starter Roy Oswalt. The Yanks pitching had a perfect game until two outs in the 6th inning when Wilson Valdez hit a homerun to break the shutout and the perfect game bid.
In the night game against the O's Sergio Mitre pitched 3 scoreless innings in his first start of the spring. Mitre allowed 3 hits while striking out three on 47 pitches. The offense was silent in the second game as the final was 0-0 in the game. In all the yanks pitching was very impressive in the split squad allowing just one run on 11 hits in 18 innings of work during the day. Next up for the Yanks will be the Atlanta Braves at 1:05 Freddy Garcia gets the start his second start of the spring.
