Maple Leafs Send Gustavsson to AHL Marlies; Boyce's Nose
The Toronto Maple Leafs accounced on Friday that they have loaned goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to the Toronto Marlies of the AHL on a conditioning stint.
Gustavsson did not have to clear waivers and must be sent back to the Maple Leafs within two weeks.
The 26-year-old native of Danderyd, Sweden is 6-13-2 with a goals against average of 3.28 and a save percentage of .890 in 23 games this season with the Leafs
The decision was made easy after rookie goalie James Reimer collected his first career NHL shutout last night, helping the Maple Leafs end a five-game losing skid against the Carolina Hurricanes. Now that Gustavsson has been assigned to the Marlies, Reimer is almost guaranteed to be with the Leafs for the next two weeks at least.
Reimer is 5-3-0 in nine appearances (eight starts) this season with a goals against average of 1.96 and a save percentage of .940.
If Reimer falters, he will have 33-year-old veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere to back him up. In 24 games this season, Giguere is 10-9-3, has a save percentage of .896 and a goals against average of 2.82.
Gustavsson is expected to make his first start tomorrow night as the Marlies visit the Rochester Americans.
Also, Boyce's nose...
Maple Leafs forward Darryl Boyce tweeted this picture Friday afternoon.
Boyce left last night's game with facial lacerations after he went face first into the photographer's hole in the glass.
He is not expected to play Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres, but will likely return Monday against the Atlanta Thrashers.
