Women's Preview: #15 Maryland vs. #10 North Carolina
Today in NCAA Women's Basketball, the #15 Maryland Terrapins will play host to the #10 North Carolina Tar Heels in a big ACC matchup. The game will be on ESPN2 at 5pm EST, and I'll be at the game myself. It is a huge game for both teams, as Maryland is 2-2 in the ACC and UNC is 3-1.
The Terps are coming off a thrilling 77-75 overtime win on the road at Virginia, while UNC blew out Wake Forest 71-56 Thursday night. In that game, the Tar Heels were led by Italee Lucas, who had 20 on the night. Lucas leads the Tar Heels with 18.1 ppg, while Jessica Breland averages 12.1 points and 7.5 rebounds. Laura Broomfield is also a force on the boards with 7.7 rebounds a game. These three are going to have to play well for UNC to beat Maryland on the road tonight. Lucas and Breland are seniors for the Tar Heels, and Broomfield is a junior, making them considerably more experienced than the young Terps.
Maryland will look to freshman Alyssa Thomas, who has had three double-doubles in her last four games and leads the team with 13.7 points and 7.4 rebounds a game, for a spark. Lynetta Kizer will also look to continue her strong play (13.3 points, 7.3 rebounds a game) against the Tar Heels. Maryland leads the ACC in rebounding margin, and if they want to win tonight they're going to need to control the boards. The Terps are young with no seniors on their roster, but they're growing fast and are hungry to get a signature win on national television tonight.
