Clint Dempsey Having Stellar Season at Fulham

United States midfielder Clint Dempsey continues to make headlines this season for English Premier League side Fulham. The team currently sits 14th in the league table, but only one point clear of the relegation zone. While Fulham aren’t having one of their better seasons to date, the team and their supporters can thank Dempsey for keeping them above the bottom of the league this year.

So far this season, Dempsey has appeared in every Premier League game for Fulham, starting 19 games, and coming on twice as a sub. He has also appeared in their one FA Cup game, and both Carling Cup games. Make that 24 out of 24 total appearances for the team.

More importantly, he leads the team in goals, having scored 6 goals in 21 Premier League games. He accounts for 28% of the teams scoring as a midfielder, and his 6 goals triple the amount of goals that any striker has scored for Fulham this year. He is also tied for second on the team with 2 assists.

While Landon Donovan may be the most famous American soccer player ever, Dempsey continues to stay under the radar to most casual American soccer fans. More passionate soccer fans know just how good Dempsey is, but I think sometimes he doesn’t get the credit he deserves. While Donovan continues to try his trade in the MLS, and even though he did have that loan stint that turned out well at Everton, Dempsey has shown year in and year out that he has the ability to play with the best players in the world. Im not saying that Donovan can’t play with the best players in the world, because we all know he can. It’s just that I think that Dempsey deserves more credit as an American soccer player.

Dempsey has become an important part to Fulham staying in the Premier League over the past few seasons, and his toughness and grit always give Fulham a fighting chance against even the most mighty of opponents. His amazing goal against Juventus in the Europa League won the 2010 BBC London Sporting Moment of the Year. The goal allowed Fulham to advance to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Even though Fulham eventually lost to Atletico Madrid in the Europa League Final, Dempsey became the first American player ever to appear in a major European Cup Final.

At only 27 years old, Dempsey will continue to be a first team choice for the US National team for many years to come. I hope that in the future he can be picked up by a bigger team in Europe. There was speculation of him going to Liverpool over this January transfer window, but the talks fell through. He deserves to show his talents for the world’s biggest clubs, and show that Americans really know how to play soccer.
