American Association Batting Champions 19th Century

The American Association existed from only 1882-1891 but it had a huge impact upon baseball and to this day when you see the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and the LA Dodgers you are seeing teams that started out in the AA.  Below is the list of their batting champions;

1882 Browning, PetePete Browning .378 Louisville Eclipse
1883 Swartwood, EdEd Swartwood .357 Pittsburgh Alleghenys
1884 Orr, DaveDave Orr .354 New York Metropolitans
1885 Browning, PetePete Browning .362 Louisville Colonels
1886 Hecker, GuyGuy Hecker .341 Louisville Colonels
1887 O'Neill, TipTip O'Neill .435 St. Louis Browns
1888 O'Neill, TipTip O'Neill .335 St. Louis Browns
1889 Tucker, TommyTommy Tucker .372 Baltimore Orioles
1890 Wolf, ChickenChicken Wolf .363 Louisville Colonels
1891 Brouthers, DanDan Brouthers .350 Boston Reds

As you can see Pete Browning and Tip O'Neill both won two batting titles.  B0th were great players in their time.  Dan Brouthers won a batting title in the NL also.  Tip O' Neill hit .435 in 1887 the highest BA in  AA history.

Pete Browning won two batting titles in the AA and one in the PL.  He hit .341 lifetime.
