Packer Defense Dominates In Monday Night Win

In a penalty-plagued game, the Packers were far from perfect, but good enough to hold off a late surge from the Baltimore Ravens.

Green Bay dominated the first half, taking a 17-0 lead into the locker room and holding it until late in the third quarter. But two quick scores by Baltimore got the Ravens right back in the game.

The Packers had every opportunity to roll over and let the Ravens win the game on their turf. But unlike last season in similar situations, the Packers showed playoff resolve by responding with a touchdown drive of their own to take a ten point lead.

After yet another special teams blunder and a pass interference penalty on cornerback Tramon Williams set the Ravens up with a first-and-goal at the one yard line, the defense flexed its muscle.

A tremendous play by cornerback Charles Woodson got the Ravens going backwards. Then on second-and-goal from the three, Williams got redemption for his two pass interference penalties by intercepting Baltimore quarterback Joe Flacco in the endzone.

After a three-and-out by the Packer offense, the defense saved the day again. This time it was linebacker A.J. Hawk coming up with a pick of Flacco to seal the victory for Green Bay.

The defense was able to shut down Baltimore running back Ray Rice all night, holding him to just 54 yards on 19 carries.

The offense was not very sharp, turning the ball over twice and dropping several passes. But they came up with scores when they needed to and move the ball fairly well on the Ravens defense.

The win keeps the Packers in the thick of the playoff hunt and in control of the second wild card spot, behind the Philadelphia Eagles who own the tiebreaker. With two tough road games looming, at Chicago and at Pittsburgh the road to the playoffs doesn't get any easier.

But if they continue to show the toughness they showed Monday, the Packers should be primed to get back to the playoff for the first time since the NFC Championship Game loss two seasons ago.
