Will Mussina Make it to the Hall of Fame?
There was a great post on Weekly Baseball Analysis about Mike Mussina being underrated and deserving to be elected to the Hall of Fame. The conversation also came up on Bryan Hoch's Bombers Beat with some good points. Here is my two cents.
Mike Mussina is a very good pitcher. If he does not win 300 games he will not make it to the Hall of Fame. 300 wins is the litmus test for pitchers that make it and those that do not. Yes there are exceptions including Bob Gibson, Robin Roberts, and Bobby Feller. But there are also precedents set including pitchers that are better than Moose including Bert Blyleven, Tommy John, Jim Kaat, and Bobby Mathews that are not in the Hall of Fame.
Could Mussina win 300 games? If Mussina can stay healthy, stay effective, and has the ambition to pitch that long, it is possible, but consider he would have to pitch probably 4 more season or in other words until he is 43 years old. I would not consider it a sure bet. I like Moose but I would not plan my trip to Cooperstown just yet.
