Utley's Hip Bothering Him
Maybe there is a reason Chase Utley has been slumping. With such a compact swing, many have wondered how Utley could have a prolonged slump like he has had. Could a bad hip be the reason?
"Chase has been bothered by a little bit of an injury that he's been
playing with," said Pat Gillick. "He's having a little bit of
a problem with his hip. It's been a little bit sore. Nothing to keep
him out of the lineup, but certainly if it's sore a little bit it could
have some effect on his hitting."
Utley of course denied the allegation as is his normal way of playing cat and mouse with the media saying, "I have no idea what you're talking about. That's a good question, because I don't know anything about that. I understand why you'd ask the question because I think I'd ask the same question."
I understand his desire to be the international man of mystery but sometimes he is over the top. If there is an injury, admit to it. Telling the truth about being hurt is not showing weakness but just being honest. He kind of reminds me of when Phillies ownership is questioned about something. You rarely get a straight answer or anything else worth listening to. I like Chase but I think this "act" he puts on when talking to the media is ridiculous.
Hopefully the hip will heal and the Chase Utley from the first 33 games that was batting .362 with 13 homeruns will return instead of the version in the last 72 games that is hitting .253 with 12 homeruns. Maybe if he were honest he would do the best thing for the team and take a day or two off to rest and come back strong.
