Cowboy Terry Glenn’s Fit – What does it all mean?

Cowboys Wide Receiver Terry Glenn’s standoff saga continued today with Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones saying, "What I should be looking at is how he fits as a player this year,"

TRANSLATION FROM JONESISM TO ENGLISH: Jones is pissed at Glenn’s refusal to sign a $500k injury contract and is making it known that there are other options available; namely Patrick Crayton who had 50 receptions in Glenn’s absence last season. There have also been rumors that the Cowboys were interested in Joe Horn from the Atlanta Falcons but Jones is quoted as saying it’s not true, which of course will only cause more rumors and more speculation.

Jones also went on to say, "It’s not about my will against Terry’s will."

TRANSLATION FROM JONESISM TO ENGLISH: Jones is pissed at Glenn’s refusal to sign a $500k injury contract and is making it known that there are other options. Of course it’s a battle of wills and I don’t see Jones backing off from this one. Glenn needs to come to terms with his current status and SIGN THE DARN INJURY CONTRACT.  Every normal worker knows that if they get hurt on the job that they will see some reduction in salary.  The Cowboys Corner wishes Glenn a long healthy career with several Super Bowl rings that say Dallas on them.  So suit up and hit the field.

My Wife Can’t Believe She Married a Dallas Cowboy’s Fan

Season One - Episode I: “The Beginning”

My lovely and talented wife was born, raised and then dragged away kicking and screaming from her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA USA (specifically the Mt. Washington section of Pittsburgh) by your author, a humble yet loveable Cowboy’s fan.

And she can’t stand it.

A devout PITTSBURGH STEELERS fan, she could walk via an ‘Incline’ ride to Three Rivers Stadium from her house.  And of course she is from a family of rabid Steelers, Penguins and Pirates fans which makes me real popular at family functions.  I can’t complain my in-laws have been great to me, they have even taken me to several Steelers games.  No Steelers-Cowboys games but still very nice.

She knew I was a Cowboys fan even before we got married.  We watched the last Cowboys – Steelers Super Bowl together.  We were married in Mt. Washington at St. Mary’s of the Mount Catholic Church which will seen like useless information but if you watch a televised Steelers game the networks usually show pictures of the city including the “Inclines” going up and down the side of Mt. Washington. The big church on the top of the hill is where we got married.

To try to describe my wife if difficult to put in words, I might say she’s somewhere between Ann Margaret and Peg Bundy from Married with Children. She hates it when I say the latter but let me be clear gentleman she is one good looking red head, milk skin, red wine drinking Irish Catholic. Did I ever hit the lottery with this woman, she looks 10 years younger than she is, she can cook and knows more about football then most men.  When the Steelers aren’t carried on the local TV affiliate she asks me to go to the bar to watch the game.

Holy Crap!

And did I mention She still can’t believe She married a Cowboys fan. More to come.  Tell your Football Widow wives and girfriends.

Tony Romo Time

Tony_romo Dallas Cowboy Quarterback history has names like “Dandy” Don Meredith, Roger “The Dodger” Staubach, Danny White and Troy Aikman.  These names tied with 8 Super Bowl appearances leaves quarterback Tony Romo the un-drafted Division I-AA Eastern Illinois University grad a lot to live up to.  To say that he came out of football no-where to be an NFL star would be an understatement.  To say his performance of the last two seasons has been as exemplary as it has been unexpected would be an understatement.

A trip down recent Cowboys quarterback history will remind Cowboys fans of names that include Quincy “The Buzz” Carter, Chad Hutchinson, and passed their prime starters like Drew Bledsoe and Vinny Testaverde. With names like these it is not surprising that the Cowboys haven’t won a playoff game since December 1996.  Keep in mind that Romo was only at the helm for two of those years and that he guided the Cowboys to the playoffs both seasons.  Expectations are high but I would like to remind Cowboys fans about a quarterback that also had high expectations and who had not won a playoff game in his brief career before last year.

Eli Manning before winning the Super Bowl was almost run out of New York by the local media with Coach Tom Coughlin not far behind.  The Giants, few will remember, started the 2007 season with a 45 – 35 loss to the Cowboys and then lost the following week to Green Bay to start the season 0 and 2.  Giants’ fans went nuts.  Well he won his first playoff game and a few after that to finish the season.  Note to Cowboys fans: It was Manning’s third full season as the Giants starting QB.

For developing Romo former Cowboys coach Bill “The Big Tuna” Parcells looks more like Nostradamus than the mild manner guy the public loves.  For developing expectations, 48 years of Cowboys history is to be blamed for that.  For Romo, if he sticks to Parcells’ 11 Quarterback Commandments he makes the Cowboys future look bright.

Bill Parcells’ – 11 Quarterback Commandments

Bill_parcells

God he has a big head.

I was reminded of these the other day; I will be applying them to the Cowboys Corner - RJ Price

1. Ignore other opinions – Press or TV, agents or advisors, family or wives, friends or relatives, fans or hangers on - ignore them on matters of football, they don’t know what’s happening here.

2. Clowns can’t run a huddle – don’t forget to have fun but don’t be the class clown. Clowns and leaders don’t mix. Clowns can’t run a huddle.

3. Fat QBs can’t avoid the rush – A quarterback throws with his legs more than his arm. Squat and run.

4. Know your job cold – this is not a game without errors. Keep yours to a minimum. Study.

5. Know your own players – Who’s fast? Who can catch? Who needs encouragement? Be precise. Know your opponent.

6. Be the same guy every day – in condition. Preparing to lead. Studying your plan. A coach can’t prepare you for every eventuality. Prepare yourself and remember, impulse decisions usually equal mistakes.

7. Throwing the ball away is a good play – sacks, interceptions and fumbles are bad plays. Protect against those.

8. Learn to manage the game – personnel, play call, motions, ball handling, proper reads, accurate throws, play fakes. Clock. Clock. Clock. Don’t you ever lose track of the clock.

9. Get your team in the end zone – passing stats and TD passes are not how you’re going to be judged. Your job is to get your team in the end zone and that is how you will be judged.

10. Don’t panic – when all around you is in chaos, you must be the hand that steers the ship. If you have a panic button so will everyone else. Our ship can’t have a panic button.

11. Don’t be a celebrity QB – we don’t need any of those. We need battlefield commanders that are willing to fight it out, every day, every week and every season and lead their team to win after win after win.

Cowboys Adam "Pacman" Jones - Week in Review

Pacman_jonesWould you let this man cover wide receivers for you?

It’s been a busy week for the Cowboys pending Cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones.  First there was the football thing; the OTA this week by all accounts was successful for the Cowboys and Jones; then there was the news story that the woman (Sadia Morrison) involved in the Las Vegas braw in which Jones plead no contest was found dead in the Bronx section of New York due to a fall.  Then syndicated radio political shock-jock Don Imus decided that his career did not include enough racial missteps about Rutgers Women's Basketball team members when Imus referred to Jones and stated that "What people should be outraged about is that they arrest blacks for no reason, I mean, there's no reason to arrest this kid six times. Maybe he did something once, but everyone does something once."

In regards to the fall victim Ms. Morrison, the Cowboys Corner sends condolences to her family.

Clearly, Mr. Imus’ comments were stupid, unfunny and border line inflammatory if anybody wasted there time listening to the radio “personality.”   Unfortunately for Jones when you have a track record such as his you open yourself up to such criticism and cheap shot humor.  The best way for

him to separate himself from that is to do his job and try to keep out of trouble.

Hear the Imus comments and Jones response:

Cowboys cut five players!

Today the Dallas Cowboys released tackle Brandon Hale, linebacker Alain Karatepeyan, wide receiver Joe West and defensive backs Justin Phinisee and Jerron Wishom. The team has 79 players on its roster with 72 under contract. The Cowboys haven’t signed their six rookie draft picks or safety Ken Hamlin, who is the designated franchise player. The team can have a maximum of 80 players on their roster for training camp. The final practice session of the three-day minicamp was canceled Thursday as storms moved through the area. The Cowboys report to training camp in Oxnard, CA, July 24. Their first practice is July 25.  The Cowboys Corner wishes the best of luck to the men released today.

Cowboys Jones and Newman a Dynamic Duo at the Corners!

The Dallas Cowboys started giving cornerback Pacman Jones repetitions with the first-team defense with 2008 Pro Bowler Terence Newman at the other corner.  Jones took several repetitions during Wednesday’s mini-camp practices with the first-team defense and played in the sub packages. His time on the field cut into the repetitions of starter Anthony Henry who has done a nice job for the Cowboys. Henry could move to safety or be part of the sub-packages. With many teams frequently going to three wide outs even on 1st and 10 or short distance the Cowboys will have a strong trio of cornerbacks with two All-Pro level players. When Jones is cleared to play this will give the Cowboys two lock down corners who can really change the dynamic of a game. This should really help out the front seven making their pass defense even stronger than last season.

Dallas Cowboys Mini-Camp Notes:

The team's first practice Tuesday was cut short by 45 minutes because of heavy winds and an approaching thunderstorm. The afternoon session was held in the team's practice bubble and went later than scheduled to make up for some of the missed earlier time.  It will be hot for the Cowboys the rest of mini-camp with highs in the 90s and humidity at about 70% with scattered t-storms.  All you guys sitting in the air conditioning should keep this in mind if you want to call these men pampered.

Cowboys Terry Glenn – “I wanna be a Cowboy!”

Glenn

WR Terry Glenn went from saying he’d rather be released from the Cowboys than sign the $500k injury waiver to “I want is to remain a Cowboy” in just about 72 hours.  This is some turnaround.  Glenn who has yet to pass a team physical due to his right knee only played in the last two games of last season and made four catches.  Not bad for $5 million.  Owner Jerry Jones wants him to sign a $500k injury settlement if he does not play during the 2008 season in lieu of his base pay is $1.74 million. If his desire to stay is legitimate he’ll be a great addition to the offense hopefully his knee will come around and if it doesn’t take the $500k and run – Slowly.

Alonzo Coleman looking to break through with Cowboys

Alonzo Alonzo Coleman #30 RB spent last season on the practice team after having an ankle sprain that shortened his pre-season. But now he is healthy and his 4.3 40 speed is back which could make him a nice compliment to Marion Barber’s straight line running. Cowboys Corner wishes him the best in the upcoming summer camp.

Andrew 'Staz' Staszewski Fundrasier

Staz Andrew "Staz" Staszewski
April 23, 1983 – April 27, 2006

The Cowboys Corner would like to thank all the people who organized and participated in this weekend’s memorial scholarship fundraiser for Andrew Staszewski.  Andrew was a professional fireman brought down in the prime of his life. He spent much of his young life saving and helping people. His scholarship helps pay for others to attend fire fighting school and follow in his very large footsteps.

Crane Collapse at new Cowboy Stadium

Cranecollapse1

Earlier today three men were injured when one of the many cranes being used in the construction of the new Cowboy Stadium collapsed. All three workers were hurt jumping off a crane cab to avoid falling parts after a cable connector failed. As mentioned just days ago on Cowboys Corner the new $1 billion dollar stadium is set to open for the 2009 season and will host the 2011 Super Bowl.

Cowboys fans everywhere wish the injured a speedy recover.

JERRY JONES - Sinner or Saint?

Jerry_jones_star

Today, many NFL training camps take on the feel of penal camps with as many criminal lawyers as player agents or contract lawyers.  No NFL team is immune it seems, the Bears just cut Cedric Benson after his latest arrest.

The Cowboy’s history has included players like Roger Staubach whose squeaky clean image followed him on and off the field as a player and even into retirement.  I like that about him and the Cowboys.  There have been other players with spotted records no doubt but it seems to be an increasing trend under owner Jerry Jones.  Has Jones sold his soul and his ethics just to win or is there more to it?  Jones seems to lead the way picking up players with a checkered past.  Pacman Jones and Tank Johnson come to mind, some may add T.O. but his problems have not included an arrest.

To be polite Jerry Jones does come off as pompous and arrogant willing to do anything to get on the TV or in the news.  Critics are fast to jump on him for hiring thugs but the critics should explore the possibility that his arrogance leads him to believe that he can turn these young men around.

In the judicial system normal people are placed in job training programs, half-way houses, and drug or alcohol rehabilitation all in an effort to turn their lives around.  Anyone who is involved with this is hailed for their compassion.  Why should young men, whose job is pro football player be any different.  Get them working, get them into a support group (a team) and get them going in the ‘right’ direction.  Is Jones a sinner or saint to be hailed for his compassion?  Only time and the local arrest sheets will tell.

Cowboy's Corner Welcomes Zach Thomas to the Cowboys

Thomas_zach_

The Cowboy’s Corner welcomes Texas native Zach Thomas to the Cowboys. He will provide senior leadership on defense while he proves all of his critics wrong. Thomas, a 12-year NFL veteran spent his entire NFL career with the Miami Dolphins prior to his release on February 14, 2008. The seven time Pro Bowl selection, led the Dolphins in tackles in 10 of his 12 seasons - recording at least 100 tackles in his first 11 seasons for a career total of 1,866 total tackles. He recorded 52 tackles in 2007 in five games missing the other 11 games with a concussion. For his career he has started every game he has played in for a total of 168 games.

Terrell Owens – T.O. Time Again!

Just a few days ago I wrote “Lots of money, lots of expectations, and lots of questions.”  Well, one of the questions has been answered or should I say unanswered like T.O.’s cell phone.  A simple test of leadership - failed.  Hopefully, his next drug test will have a better result.

It has been reported that T.O. missed a random but mandatory drug screening. In this age on modern ‘Star Trek” like communications of cell phones, Blackberry’s, text messaging, etc. T.O. missed the call. He will now be subject to a more rigorous league “reasonable cause” drug screening regiment.  This of course will only fuel rumors that he had something to hide.  Well rumors are just rumors but what concerns this fan is what it shows to his other teammates. T.O.’s 13 years of pro experience makes him second only to QB Brad Johnson on the team for most years of experience. What message does this send to the rookies and the other young players including guys with a checkered past like Adam “Pacman” Jones and Tank Johnson. This can be no good for a team locker room.  T.O. needs to step up and answer the call on and off the field.

Change of subject:  As a long time Cowboys fan it saddens me to write that my lovely and talented wife is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. She still can figure out why she married me.  More later.

Super Bowl at New Cowboy's Stadium 2011

Hey Cowboy’s fans mark your calendar the NEW $1 Billion dollar, retractable roof; seats 100, 000 people Cowboy stadium will host the SUPER BOWL February 6th 2011. Scheduled to open for regular season play in 2009 the new stadium will dwarf all other NFL stadiums and match the excitement of several storied college stadiums like Michigan and Tennessee.  Jerry Jones modeled the stadium idea after the Cowboys play a pre-season game in the soccer stadium in Mexico City several years ago.  You can go to http://stadium.dallascowboys.com/ to get a tour of the new stadium. I recommend turning off the volume so that you do not have to hear Jerry Jones try to wax poetic. Additional season tickets will also be available when the stadium opens. PACMAN - 4TH ROUND GAMBLE.

When the Cowboys picked up the Pacman for a 4th round pick pundits said the Cowboys were crazy.  All told, he's been arrested six times and has been involved in 12 incidents requiring police intervention since being drafted.  [Thanks to Derry a WVU grad for pointing out that the Pacman is a Mountaineer from West Virginia University – Note to all readers send your kids to Rutgers.] Maybe the pundits were right, he’s a heck of a gamble sorry for the pun – in his defense he is now reported to have paid off his Vegas gambling debt.

When the Patriots gave the Raiders a late round pick for Randy Moss many thought that they were just wasting their time. He was washed up, a problem child, that even the ethical and magical Coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t be able to fix.  What a difference a year makes; one of them is on probation and the other has just had the best season ever. Moss even acted the elder statesman when the trash talking started during the season.  Also, who would have thought a sports icon, the face of the league two years ago would now be ‘doing’ two years. The Atlanta Falcons certainly didn’t.

Yesterday, former Cowboy and now football commentator Deion Sanders said “God brought him here and there is no better place to be” well I don’t like to bring God into football but if he needs that level of help so be it.  God and Cowboys - there’s a song in there somewhere.

Is the Pacman a gamble, you bet but there is nothing more motivating then hitting bottom.  Only time will tell who will be on probation and who will be the elder statesman.

Terrell Owens – T.O. Time!

Terrell_owensLots of money, lots of expectations, lots of questions.  Let’s face it, if you’re a Cowboy’s fan the big new contract and all that money means only one thing.  The Cowboys must get back to the Super Bowl and they must win.  Otherwise a multi-year contract to a pushing 40, history of injury superstar will go down as the eight for one Hershel Walker trade to the Minnesota Vikings of a new generation.  It’s a lot of pressure to place on one man in a team game even though his play on the field the last two years has been exceptional.  He has the most TD catches of any player in the NFL which includes more than Randy Moss or Plaxico Burress. Is it T.O. time? Yes, time to take out the earrings, time to wear normal suits, time to talk less and do more.

For a team that hasn’t won a playoff game in over a decade the T.O. time is now.

Jim McKay and Dwight White

It is with great sadness the MyTeamRivals.com announces the passing of Sports Commentator extraordinaire Jim McKay and Steelers great Dwight White. My earliest sports memory other than the Cowboy’s winning their first Super Bowl was the 1972 Olympics when Mark Spitz won seven gold medals. Those memories will always include McKay’s “they're all gone” comments about 11 innocent athletes who just happened to be from the wrong place at the wrong time.  The hair still stands up on the back of my neck when I hear it.

Dwight White (AKA Mad Dog) was part of the Pittsburgh Steelers four Super Bowl teams of the 1970’s including two of the best Super Bowls ever versus t1_61_060708_dwight1_2he Cowboys. Again this time was a big part of my youth.

Both were too young.  Our condolences to both families.

Williams Big Key to 2008 Success

Roy_williams Strong safety Roy Williams has had so much speculation surrounding him this off season. Can he return to the form in which he played a few years ago when he was one of the best in the game? Has he turned people off with his comments about playing in Wade Phillips defensive scheme? He struggled in coverage last season and one has to question whether it is the scheme or if Williams has lost a step.

At 27 he is still young. But the NFL is a brutal game and the loss of a split second in speed or reaction time can be the difference between a Pro Bowler and a retired player. Roy had 115 tackles but didn't have a sack or a stop behind the line of scrimmage.

The controversy continued when he missed an OTA for a family vacation then had a private meeting with the teams defensive coaches about his role on the team.
Mike_jenkins
Put all of these things aside though and a good season from Williams could make Dallas the best secondary in the league. The Cowboys have improved the cornerback position with rookies Mike Jenkins and Orlando Scandrick and possibly Pacman Jones. They also expect Pro Bowl free safety Ken Hamlin to return.

The Cowboys need the stir around Williams to stop and Roy to step up, prove his critics wrong, and have the best season of his career. I think his best years could still be ahead of him. Does he believe that? Maybe changing his number back to his college number of 38 will help. If not, it could spell trouble for the Boys.

Disarray at Cowboys Camp

Just when things were looking good, the Cowboys had some internal squabbling. Terry Glenn and Ken Hamlin have contract concerns, Greg Ellis is having job security concerns, and Pacman Jones had his townhome foreclosed on.

Glenn is understandably upset because the Cowboys want to have him sign a split contract that would pay him $1.7 million in 2008 but only $500,000 if he ends up on the injured reserve because of his knee. Glenn has every right to be upset as the Cowboys have insulted him with this proposition. I understand what their concerns are, but there is something to be said for keeping your players happy.

Ken Hamlin wants a long term deal that pays more than those given to Gibril Wilson and Madieu Williams. Again, the perception given to Hamlin is that he is not worth as much as other players. Glen and Hamlin have both missed OTA's in protest.

Ellis left OTA's after Tuesday's workout due to worrying about his job security because the coaches decided to give the youngsters more reps in these non-contact drills rather than the aging veteran, causing this general response from the coaching staff: "You gotta be kidding me." Ellis needs to grow up. I have to side with the Cowboys on this one. They need to see the young players and evaluate what they have. They also may be trying to protect Ellis from injury.

Then there is the new reality show "How Many Ways Can Pacman Make It Harder To Be Reinstated?". Jones had his Nashville Townhome foreclosed upon as he failed to make payment. Creditors had already entered the property to repo his refrigerator and pool table. As I have said previously, this guy is a nightmare. I hope it all works out but I am skeptical. I hope to eat my words come the season.

I thought the recent signings would give this team a lift and propel them to a good season. It seems they will need more to get this team mentally prepared to compete.

NFL Owners Opt Out of Labor Deal

The NFL owners voted 30-2, with the Dallas Cowboys being in the majority, to opt out of the current labor deal two years early.

This means the 2010 season will be played with no salary cap and there could potentially be a lock out after the 2010 season.

The move didn't sit well with Gene Upshaw;

"If nothing is done by then and we go through an uncapped year, I'm not going to try and sell the players on a cap again," Upshaw said on a conference call Tuesday. "I don't know who will, but it won't be me. Once we go through the cap, why would we agree to it again?"

While it is a long ways off the hope is that they will come together prior to 2010. Experience tells me that nothing will happen until the last minute however.

No Need to Worry About T.O.

Terrell_owens The Dallas Cowboys signed Marion Barber and Terrence Newman to long term deals. But what about Terrell Owens? Owens is in the final year of a 3 year $25 million contract that he signed after leaving Philadelphia where he had contract disputes.

Despite his history of volatility over contracts and money, Owens is not worried about his current status or upset that Barber and Newman were rewarded while he waits in limbo. Owens said, "It's easy for me because of the relationship. I met with Jerry my first year and talked to him on the phone more so than any owner outside of this organization ever, from being in San Francisco and Philly. He's a guy that's very personable, he interacts and he talks with his players. And that's all you ever want. If we're going to be a happy family, involve everyone."

The trust that Jerry Jones has built with Owens, along with the relationships he has forged with his teammates, makes Owens not worry like he did in years past about being compensated fairly.
Jerry_jones
One teammate who was more than willing to speak on T.O.'s behalf was Tony Romo who said, "I think you are seeing a change in a guy, a transformation that has taken place over the last four or five years. We're pretty lucky to have it happen here. I enjoy the guy. He's a good teammate. He actually cares about each one of us; he cares about getting better. He gets probably a bad rap because you don't get to see him every day. I'm pretty sure we'll be just fine with getting that taken care of."

With this being said, Owens is making $7.5 million this year and cost $9 million against the cap making resigning him not so much a problem with the salary cap. With the way Jones and Owens answer when asked about an extension it leads you to believe they have discussed this and have a plan in place. Worse case scenario if Jones decides he doesn't want to or can't pay whatever the going rate is for Owens, he can always protect his rights with a franchise tag. It is my bet you will see T.O. in Dallas at the new stadium ready to lead the team to the Super Bowl.

Romo and Davis' Contracts Reworked to Improve Cap

Tony Romo and Leonard Davis had their contracts reworked to help the Dallas Cowboys with the salary cap. Romo and Davis agreed to take their money now. How it works is the Cowboys moved some guaranteed base salary for Romo and Davis into signing bonus, paying them that money now. This enabling the club to spread that cost over the life of the contract instead of counting all this year as base salary against the cap.

The restructuring helped the Cowboys save $3 million this year and $8 million next season. This will leave ample money for the team to sign their rookies including Felix Jones, Martellus Bennett and Mike Jenkins. Another good business move by the Cowboys front office!
