He was a wrestler and manager, too. I think that makes him 152 in wrestling years. That's is a pretty stellar run for a guy who was The Rock before The Rock, who broke out of the wrestling scene and onto Hollywood Squares in the '90 without anyone asking why.

U.S. forward Charlie Davies seriously injured in car crash -- latimes.com

A fatal car accident in Virginia early Tuesday might impact U.S. hopes of achieving anything significant at soccer's 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

American forward Charlie Davies, among the team's most promising players in the past year, was severely injured in the 3:15 a.m. crash on the George Washington Memorial Parkway near Washington.

Another passenger, Ashley J. Roberta, 22, of Phoenix, Md., was killed in the crash.

Police said the driver, whom they did not identify, apparently lost control of the vehicle, which hit a guard rail and split in half.

Davies, 23, underwent more than five hours of surgery at Washington Hospital Center and afterward was described as being in "serious" condition.

Neil Buethe, a spokesman for U.S. Soccer, said Davies' unspecified injuries were not life-threatening but that it was too early to "comment on how this affects Charlie's future."

Davies, who plays for FC Sochaux in the French league, made his national team debut in June 2007 and has played in 17 games for the U.S., scoring four goals.

"Obviously, as a team we are saddened to learn this news," U.S. Coach Bob Bradley said in a statement released by the federation. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Charlie and his family, as well as the people in the car and the families of the others involved.

"As a team, we are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard."

Davies became a regular starter for the national team in the past year. His partnership up front with Jozy Altidore has been developing well and Davies' speed, matching that of Landon Donovan, has given the U.S. encouragement that it could do well in South Africa.

Davies started and played 78 minutes Saturday night when the U.S. defeated Honduras, 3-2, in Honduras to qualify for the World Cup. The Americans can secure first place in the regional qualifying group by defeating Costa Rica at RFK Stadium tonight (5 p.m., ESPN2 and Galavision).

Honduras is at El Salvador, needing a victory and a U.S. tie or a win to overtake Costa Rica and qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1982.

Anything less would consign Honduras to a two-game playoff against South America's fifth-place finisher, but Coach Reinaldo Rueda told the Associated Press that Honduras was going to El Salvador "with plans to guarantee our participation."

Costa Rica too is intent on qualifying. "Everything is on the line," said its Brazilian coach, Rene Simoes. "We are not thinking about the playoff."

Mexico, which already has qualified, plays Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain, Trinidad, in its qualifying finale.

Uruguay can also secure a spot today. It plays Argentina at Centenario Stadium in Montevideo.

Argentina needs only a tie to advance, but if Uruguay wins and Ecuador defeats already-qualified Chile in Santiago, Coach Diego Maradona's Argentina would be eliminated.

Argentina has not failed to reach the World Cup since 1970.

Hamels lined up to start NLCS Game 1 | MLB.com: News

It is no surprise that the 2008 NLCS MVP Cole Hamels will get the nod for game 1 of the 2009 series. His likely opponent will be former Phillies pitcher Randy Wolf. The advantage should go to the Phillies so long as Wolf continues his struggles against his former team and Hamels pitches like he did last year.

Hamels struggled in his last outing in game 2 of the NLDS and suffered the only loss to the Colorado Rockies.

MyTeamRivals.com Mourns the Loss of Jack Kemp

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jack Kemp passed away on May 2nd after battling cancer. He was 73. Kemp died a little after 6:00pm last night surrounded by his family and pastor. Kemp went into politics after his football career and served 9 terms in Congress before running for Vice President on Bob Dole's ticket in 1996.

I had the pleasure of having lunch with Jack Kemp in 1993 in Tampa, Florida. He spent over an hour with several friends and I and we really got to know the man that was Jack Kemp. This was a man that had a real heart for people and a strong faith in his beliefs. He wanted to get beyond partisan politics and make a difference peoples lives.

The football community and our country lost a great man. MyTeamRivals.com sends condolences to his family and loved ones.

Happy trails, John Madden!!!!

Earlier this week, NFL legend John Madden announced his retirement from the broadcast booth. For the past thirty years, Madden has entertained millions of NFL fans with his unique slant on football. Who could forget his pattented "boom!" everytime something exciting happened on the field, his insane, but funny use of the telestrater, or his pure and genuine love for the game which came through loud and clear.

Madden was informative and entertaining. Too many current broadcasters are too "corporate" and display no passion for the game. They are boring! Others do a poor mans version of John Madden which tends to come across as insincere.

Madden was an original and will be missed.

His retirement, thankfully, has nothing to do with health reasons, but rather because he simply wanted to spend more time with his Grandchildren. (Although I think it a bit coincidental that he retired the same year as Brett Favre----Madden had a well know "man crush" on Favre---I am kidding).

Our Sympathies to Harry Kalas' Family and the Phillies

MyTeamRivals.com is saddened by the passing of Harry Kalas today. Harry was one of the greatest broadcasters in the history of the game and his 38 years calling Philadelphia Phillies games will be remembered forever.

Kalas collapsed before the Phillies game today in the broadcast booth and passed away at the age of 73. He will never be replaced.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and three sons as well as his Phillies family and the millions of fans that loved him. We will miss you Harry. You were the best. You were the voice of Philadelphia.
